Transcript: Table of Contents The samples I am about to pass around to you are Sequoia tree bark. This bark was already fallen so I didn't damage the tree. The different types of bark represent different factors I anted to talk to you about. Size Size Pictures Fire Scars Rings Bark Sequoia As trees age rings form due to the fact that trees grow from the inside out. They continue to put layers of bark on the outside of their body every year. Like that of snake, you can tell how old a tree is based on the amount of rings it has. Scars Why do trees gradually earn their rings and how often? What shape did I use on the section called Scars? When fire strikes it leaves trees with scars. The burn also causes a butyraceous seared black sap to drip from the burned area. Trees heal over time, but are often left with their scars for a long while in the meantime. Rings Any Questions Bark Fire What is the largest tree in the world called? Natural fires in the park are usually caused by lightning. This generally doesn't kill adult trees. Some fires are started on purpose. However, this is not a bad thing. Burning the tops of trees causes seeds to fall. A very small amount of seeds actually live to grow up. That is why it is so important to burn trees. No matter how bad it sounds. Pop Quiz National Park Giant Sequoia trees live up to their name. Some are up to 22 elephants high. You are able to drive your car through an average one. You could build a house in one. The General Sherman is the largest tree in the world. it is 23.8 stories high. That is slightly larger then the Statue of Liberty. It is 1026 feet around at the bottom. Name one fact you now know about the size of Sequoias?

Transcript: Summer in this forested area of the parks offer warm days and cool evenings. These elevations receive an average of 40-45" of precipitation annually. Much of this rain falls during the winter, which would result in a deep blanket of snow from December to May. Sub-zero temperatures are rare. In the summer, occasional afternoon thundershowers may occur. Sherman Tree Trail An 0.8-mile roundtrip paved trail that descends from the parking lot to the base of the General Sherman tree that meanders through a grove of giant sequoia trees. Tunnel Log is a tunnel cut through a fallen giant sequoia tree in Sequoia National Park. The tree, which measured 275 feet tall and 21 feet in diameter, fell across a park road in 1937 due to natural causes. The following year, a crew cut an 8-foot tall, 17-foot wide tunnel through the trunk, making the road passable again. Crescent Meadow is a small, sequoia-rimmed meadow in the Giant Forest region of Sequoia National Park. This sierran montane meadow marks the western terminus of the High Sierra Trail, which stretches from the meadow across the Great Western Divide to Mount Whitney. With a height of 83.8 meters and a diameter of 7.7 meters, the Sherman tree is one of the largest trees on Earth.
