Transcript: Lung diseases and other problems How smoking kills How Smoking Kills Problems with smoking Smoking can cause cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis. Problems with Vaping Vaping is also harmful to your body as vapes produce a number of dangerous chemicals including acetaldehyde, acrolein, and formaldehyde. These aldehydes can cause lung disease, as well as cardiovascular disease. What exactly is Bacterial Pneumonia? Bacterial Pneumonia The most common type of bacterial pneumonia is called pneumococcal pneumonia. Pneumococcal pneumonia is caused by the Streptococcus pneumoniae germ that normally lives in the upper respiratory tract. Bacterial Pneumonia is an infection in the lungs caused by certain types of bacteria. What is COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)? COPD COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It’s more than just a nagging cough or chest cold; it’s a progressive disease that affects your lungs and your ability to breathe. COPD is a combination of Chronic bronchitis, which is a condition in which the airways in your lungs become inflamed, causing you to cough and produce more mucus than usual. The other part of COPD is Emphysema, which damages the air sacks in the lungs. Normally, the air sacs are able to fill with air and expand like a balloon when you inhale. When you have emphysema, air sacs become less elastic, causing air to become trapped in your lungs. What is Collapsed Lungs? Collapsed Lung A collapsed lung occurs when air escapes from the lung. The air then fills the space outside of the lung between the lung and chest wall. This buildup of air puts pressure on the lung, so it cannot expand as much as it normally does when you take a breath. The medical name of this condition is pneumothorax.
