By attending classes a student will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to function in a global society, and at every level, performance is on track and on time for success. It is the expectation that attendance will be reported and recorded every day. If a student is absent, the parent and/or guardian shall call the school as soon as possible after the school is in session. If an absence is not reported the school shall notify the parent of the student’s absence. Please refer to the following policies regarding excused and unexcused absences. All absences, regardless of reason, shall be recorded on the student’s permanent attendance record. Looking at Attendance Rates: Attendance Rates tell how many students show up each day. Chronic Absenteeism rates indicates which students do not show up. • Average Daily Attendance (ADA) – how many students are attending school. • Chronic Absenteeism (students missing 10% or more of school excused or unexcused) – which means students are missing too much school. What is an excused absence? An excused absence is defined and has been classified as excused by the Board of Education Absences shall be excused for the following reasons: • Illness of the student or medical appointments • Urgent need of the child to be at home due to illness in the immediate family • Death in the family • Absences for religious observances • Participation in a district-approved or school-sponsored activity or event • At the discretion of the administration, students whose parent or person acting as a parent is an active duty member of the armed forces and is leaving or deploying shortly for military services. • Absences approved by the principal and prearranged by the parent, student, and principal" Factors Factors That Contribute to Chronic Absence Illness Transportation Trauma Homelessness Barriers Negative school Experiences Lack of Engagement Misconceptions Bullying Suspensions Undiagnosed disability Relevancy Engaging instruction No meaningful relationships Teacher absences Unwelcoming school Climate Absences are only a problem if they are unexcused Missing a couple of days a month does not affect learning Attendance only matters during senior year KCKPS Root Causes KCKPS Root Causes for Absences Student-Specific Factors School-Specific Factors Family-Specific Factors Teenage Motherhood Negatie Peer Influence Bullyig Disengagement Substance Abuse Emotinal Challenges Illness School Culture Lack of connection In-School Support Discipline/suspension policies Housing instability Low parental involvement Caregiver Instability Abuse/Neglect Community-Specific Factors Violence Poverty Transportation Affordable Health care Addressing Chronic Absenteeism Tiered System of Support Attendance Works Tiered System of Suppport for Reducing Chronic Absenteeism Tier 3- Individualized Interventions Tier 1-Prevention Tier 2-Early Intervention Creating a culture of attendance Make school a place students want to be Welcome students and families at the door Call to express concern when they miss class Provide academic supports to struggling students so school becomes a place of success not failure Incentives Stabilize attendance Remove/decrease obstacles Rule out more serious problems Establish contact with guardians Identify times/triggers for potential future absences Address academic deficiencies from absences Students who miss more than 20% of school days Those students that aren’t responding to Tier 2 Interventions Individual and intensive Often requiring assistance from outside agencies or professionals Engaging School Climate Positive Relationships with students and families Impact of Absences on achievement is widely understood Monitor the Data Common Barriers identified and recognized Parental Engagement Recognize Good and Improving Attendance Activity Tiers of Intervention to Reduce Chronic Absence Activity Pick 2 students from you school Who will be in your team of intervention? Attendance Presentation

Transcript: By Robert Speciale M. Ed Why Attendance Matters. Over 7 million (1 in 7) U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year. Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. According to Attendanceworks.org... According to Attendanceworks.org... CCSD Policy Highlights (Elementary) "Individual student absences should be limited to a maximum of twenty, (20), total absences per school year. Elementary students who exceed 20 unapproved absecnes during the school year may be retained in the current grade." "...all arranged absences in excess of ten, (10), during a school year shall be considered unapproved. All arranged absences for which the makeup work was not completed and submitted as specified by the teacher shall be considered unapproved." CCSD Policy Highlights (Elementary) Indian Springs E.S. Current Attendance Attendance for the Elementary School, (Pre-K through 5th grade), has hovered between 95% and 96% for the 2017-2018 school year. With 99 students in the school, this means about 4 to 5 students a day, on average, are absent. While this is a great number, we as a community should always seek to increase our attendance to get as close to 100% as possible, as the academic benefits for the students are clear. Indian Springs E.S. Current Attendance What Can We do? Absences are more about missed learning opportunities than "making up work". Work with the school. Encourage your child to come to school on time. It's our job to make them want to be here too. Especially for older students, being in school is even more important. What Can We do? Transcript: Parents are sent praise-postcards or 'thank you' letters. These include information on why good attendance is helping their child and a note of thanks. This helps to improve our overall relationship with parents. Improved behaviour Good relationships with parents help to improve attendance. What does it look like? 95% Attendance There is more positive contact between school and parents regarding attendance. More events take place throughout the year in which parents are invited into school. Moving from our currently level of around 93% to 95% attendance could result in a 10-12% improvement in attainment. 112 pupils with 95%+ •62 Green (55%) •30 purple (26.5%) •12 Yellow (10.5%) •9 Blue (8%) Attendance is at the forefront of school life. Pupils are crystal clear on the importance of good attendance. Achieved through:- 50 pupils with -95% attendance: •20 Green (40%) •9 Purple (18%) •13 Yellow (26%) •8 Blue (16%) Regular phone-calls home are made to thank parents for improvements in attendance. Where possible correspondence is translated into Somali. Parents are rewarded too More Focus on Attendance 106 pupils with 95%+ attendance: Total of 9320 demerits (87.9 each) DCFS research: High attendance means students are more subjected to the routines and procedures of the school. Thus higher attendance will result in a decrease in behavioural incidents. Our current Year 8 cohort includes:- 58 pupils with -95% attendance: Total of 9328 demerits (160.8 each) Improved attainment Student Services use time to strengthen our relationship with parents. Stronger links between attendance and rewards "If a school can improve attendance by 1%, they will see a 5-6% improvement in attainment." "Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = a GCSE grade DROP in achievement." Pupils are rewarded for good attendance. They receive early-lunch passes, potential 100% club membership, certificates and praise. School trips are organised for pupils that have attendance of 95% or above. Pupils are well-aware of the rewards available for keeping their attenance high. Current assessment data indicates a strong correlation between attendance and progress... The current Year 8 cohort includes:- Assemblies reiterating the importance of attendance. Competitions between forms/houses based on attendance. Individual time with tutors discussing attendance/progress. Project based activities that allow pupils to take ownership of form time. Morning enrichment clubs designed to improve attendance. It is plain that you found it and have it, for otherwise you would not have come away beforehand." Agathon and Socrates “It would be a good thing, Agathon, if wisdom were the sort of thing that flows from the fuller of us into the emptier, just by our touching one another, as the water in wine cups flows through a wool thread from the fuller to the emptier. For if wisdom too is like that, then I set a high price on my being placed alongside you, for I believe I shall be filled from you with much fair wisdom. My own may turn out to be a sorry sort of wisdom, or disputable like a dream; but your own is brilliant and capable of much development, since it has flashed out so intensely from you while you are young; and yesterday it became conspicuous among more than thirty thousand Greek witnesses." "You are outrageous, Socrates," Agathon said. "A little later you and I will go to court about our wisdom, with Dionysus as judge, but now first attend to dinner." how water flows Principle at play When they do engage in a contest about love Timeline YEAR Alcibiades' Speech Socrates, he claims, is like “those silenuses that sit in the shops of herm sculptors, the ones that craftsman make holding reed pipes or flutes; and if they are split in two and opened up they show they have images of gods within.” (215b) Alcibiades' Speech You, in my opinion,' I said, 'have proved to be the only deserving lover of mine; and it seems to me that you hesitate to mention it to me. Now I am in this state: I believe it is very foolish not to gratify you in this or anything else of mine—my wealth or my friends—that you need; for nothing is more important to d me than that I become the best possible; and I believe that, as far as I am concerned, there is no one more competent than you to be a fellow helper to me in this. So I should be far more ashamed before men of good sense for not gratifying a man like you than I should be before the many and senseless for gratifying you.' Seduction Scene 'Really, my dear Alcibiades, you're no sucker if what you say about me is really true and there is some power in me e through which you could become better. You must see, you know, an impossible beauty in me, a beauty very different from the fairness of form in yourself. So if, in observing my beauty, you are trying to get a share in it and to exchange beauty for beauty, you are intending to get far the better deal. For you are trying to acquire the truth of beautiful things in exchange for the seeming and opinion of beautiful things; and you really have in mind to exchange "gold for bronze." But blessed one do consider better: Without your being aware of it—I may be nothing. Thought, you know, begins to have keen eyesight when the sight of the eyes starts to decline from its peak; and you are still far from that.' Conclusion conclusion If Socrates were to have sex with Alcibiades, he would perpetuate: 1) the idea that people can make each other wise. impact: prevent Alcibiades from realizing his ignorance about wisdom 2) Alcibiades belief that his physical attractiveness is the most important thing about him impact: the belief could harm Alcibiades as he begins to decline from his physical peak, when “Thought begins to have keen eyesight.” (219a) 3) Socrates would be no better than the sophists who cannot acknowledge the ways in which they are ignorant, and thus, risk self-deception. Advantages Advantages to my account: -Fits with the well-known picture of a Socrates who: 1) proclaims his own ignorance. 2) critiques the Sophists for i. both not acknowledging what they do not know ii. exchanging money for wisdom -Makes explicit the way Plato critiques the customs of his time -Throws into question a vision of Socrates as someone who consistently denies bodily urges -Makes clear that the container model is supposed to function in opposition to the image of pregnancy and birth. Accounts of “Plato’s Appropriation of Reproduction” run these two images together.
