This is shown as the stars seems to reflect on Tommo's life and what he's done, rather than just being beautiful objects to witness. Paragraph 1 by Ollie, Nicky, Viola Storyline After hopeless Fate is less of a belief and more of a comfort. Big Joe Setting nostalgic Mood -combating desires -journey of character -authors intention War diminishes peoples beliefs Facing reality/ need control Paragraph 2 lonely With war, faith in the spiritual (Heaven, God) is diverted into the substantial (people, memories) Charlie returns to the camp to a relieved Tommo, only to be taken away to immediate health care. Charlie explains to Tommo that his injury is his "ticket home" and is granted leave for a short time to see his family and new born son. Innocence/Belief Sentence variety- Big Joe's innocence and thoughts. contrast wistful Effect on the reader: This affects the reader through portraying Tommo's thought proccess, thus giving the emotions that Tommo is feeling at the very moment. Therefore, Tommo is easier to relate to and as a result, the reader is affected and is almost immersed into the extract. hope that ebbs away Mother and Molly into the details Theme Materialism/ Control Extract pg.163 he has no more belief in heaven, anna’s death-> solidates his beliefs Literary This book clearly shows the effect of war on a person, and how it shapes them, especially shown through the man who flew into Blighty and aspired them, as if to make them participate in the war. It shows the relationships of the main character, Tommo Peaceful and how he and the others around him develop together as a community and their lives become entwined through regular events that happen in their everyday lives. The moment that Tommo and some of his friends are suddenly recruited by a group of soldiers, their lives are changed forever and it is shown that war changes them drastically, more for the worst. One way Michael shows this is through Tommo Peaceful even at one point saying that there isn’t a god, that there is no hope. Eventually, Charlie gets killed in the end but Tommo rather than just feeling sad about it, promises to stay alive saying: “I have promises to keep.” Mother's voice in my head innocence Theme Comforted opposed to Tommo -innocence comforts -empathy "They" : deserve no name?Ambiguous, Insignificant, no noble death- theme " Heaped"- negative connotation, forced Pg 16 and 17: “And I know that Father is happy now in his next life” “Father is not really in his coffin any more, but in heaven up there” The boys are in a intense advance to the enemy line through no-man's land. It is during this attack when Charlie and Tommo promise to not leave each other's side throughout the duration of the advancement. Shortly after, Tommo loses sight of his brother and begins to panic for his safety own wellbeing Tommo ponders Charlie’s supposed death at the hands of an attack on the Fritz, and remembers his childhood, trying to identify the stars. Amongst the stars, he ‘sees’ his father and Charlie, and confesses how his Father died. After that, Tommo is then ‘told’ by Charlie to be awake, and he breathes in cold air to keep himself alert. Diction/Structure pg. 142-144 heaven is not there, heaven only belongs to innocents like Big Joe (literate thoughts, impact on reader)

Transcript: The right to peaceful assembly and association means that people have a right to come together. This can include political or labor demonstrations. These freedoms also mean you have the right to come together in, for example, cultural groups, education organizations, sports clubs, unions, or political parties. The Freedom of Peaceful Assembly is usually associated with the right to participate in a public demonstration. The key word is "peaceful". If a public display threatens to turn violent, the police may charge the participants with unlawful assembly. If things get disorderly or chaotic police may charge participants with rioting. Officer Bubbles Charter of Rights and Freedoms Sections 2(c) and (d)--Freedoms of Peaceful Assembly and Association 3rd Summit of the Americas - The protests were for various causes, including poverty and anti-capitalism. Protests mainly consisted of peaceful demonstrations and rallies but also took form of a riot as a group of protesters using black bloc tactics caused vandalism to several businesses in Downtown Toronto. - Vandals smashed the windows of various office buildings and stores along Yonge Street, Queen Street West and College Street using hammers, flag poles, umbrellas, chunks of pavement and mailboxes. Conflicts also erupted between purported anarchists and journalists who were recording property destruction - Sound cannons were not used during the weekend, but tear gas was used for the first time in the history of Toronto, being deployed in a few locations by muzzle blasts. Rubber bullets and pepper spray were also used against many protesters. At the end of the day, Toronto Police Service chief Bill Blair announced that 130 people had been arrested. Section 2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: 1. freedom of conscience and religion; 2.freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; 3.freedom of peaceful assembly; and 4.freedom of association. By: Jessica Rowe Freedom of Peaceful Assembly This right was made so if people disagree with the government and find other people that have the same view they should have the right to stand up and fight for what they believe in, but they should also have to do so in a peaceful manor. Why is This Important? Fundamental Freedoms G20 Summit - Police responded to the protesters in the "green zone" by firing tear gas canisters, water cannon, and rubber bullets, dispersing large groupings of protesters both violent and peaceful, including teach-ins and teams of medics providing first aid to other protesters. - Police claimed that their actions were justified in protecting delegates from "red-zone" attempts to break through the fence, as well as to violent protesters destroying property and attacking the police, the media, and other protesters - Many protesters accuse the police of excessive force, claiming that the police's abundant use of tear gas and rubber bullets was both completely disproportionate to the scale of violence, and primarily directed at unarmed, peaceful demonstrators with dispersal of violent protesters an afterthought. A number of protesters were severely injured by rubber bullets; also, tear gas canisters were fired directly at protesters on numerous occasions, in violation of the protocols governing their use.

Extract from Private Peaceful Charlie Peaceful Setting Troop Context “It doesn't seem possible, but on the second day the bombardments intensifies. Every heavy gun the Germans have seems to be aimed at our sector. There is a moment when the last fragile vestiges of controlled fear give way to terror ,a terror that can be hidden no longer. I find myself curled into a ball on the ground and screaming for it to stop. Then I feel Charlie lying beside me, folding himself around me to protect me, to comfort me. He begins to sing Oranges and Lemons softly in my ear, and soon I am singing with him, and loudly too, singing instead of screaming. Before we know it the whole dugout is singing along with us. But the barrage goes on and on and on, until in the end neither Charlie nor Oranges and Lemons can drive away the terror that is engulfing me and invading me, destroying any last glimmer of courage and composure I may have left. All I have now is my fear. When their attack comes, in the pearly light of dawn, it falters before it even gets near our wire. Our machine gunners see to that, knocking them down like thousands of grey skittles, never to rise again. My hands are shaking so much I can hardly reload my rifle. When they recoil and turn and run we wait for the whistle and then go out over the top. I go because the others go, moving forward as if in a trance, as if outside myself altogether. I find myself suddenly on my knees and I don't know why. There is blood pouring down my face, and my head is wracked with a sudden burning pain so terrible that I feel it must burst. I feel myself falling out of my dream down into a world of swirling darkness. I am being beckoned into a world I have never been to before, where it is warm and comforting and all-enveloping I know I am dying my own death, and I welcome it.” Before the text “Our machine gunners see to that, knocking them down like thousands of grey skittles, never to rise again” - simile “I feel myself falling out of my dream down into a world of swirling darkness” - metaphor Sensitive words, strong emotions Misconception of war “Neither Charlie nor Oranges and Lemons can drive away the terror that is engulfing me and invading me, destroying any last glimmer of courage” Terror, engulfing, invading and destroying Engulfing: Thomas being pulled into an ocean of terror.
