Transcript: Discovering lightning Lightning The occurrence of a natural electrical discharge of very short duration and high voltage between a cloud and the ground or within a cloud, accomplished by a bright flash and typically also thunder. Lightning 1. A bolt of lightning can produce 35,000 to 40,000 amperes of current (this is the flow rate of electricitysimilar to GPH = gallons per hour with water flow.). 2.Generates temperatures as high as 50,000 degrees or 90,032 fahrenheit. 3. Causes billions of Dollars of property damage yearly and results in fire and destruction. Benjamin Franklin just discovered that lightning was electricity. Lightning has been around since time began or the earth was created so lightning was not really discovered just the elements of lightning were dicovered. Lightning's damages Effect of Lightning The thousands of thunderstorms on earth each day produces millions of flashes of lightning, most of which occurs in tropical and subtropical areas. Most are harmless but a number of them strike airplanes, buildings, ships and people. A direct strike to a person can cause serious injuries or death.

Transcript: Did you know that about 3 billion lightning bolts strike Earth's surface every year? What do you call a baby tree struck by lightning? A zapling! Lightning By: Mackenzie Lightning is more deadly than other storms because lightning is one of natures most recurrent and common spectacles. How Lightning Forms Lightning is basically a giant spark of electricity. It forms with the positive and negative charges of a thunderstorm cloud. Once lightning strikes, the air around the strike heats up. This causes the air to expand and vibrate, creating the sound of thunder. How often Lightning Occurs Lightning forms most often when there's an increase in moisture. When there's more moisture more clouds form. When there's more clouds it's more likely lightning will strike. Thunder Thunder is useful because you can use it to determine how far away the lightning is. Once you see the lightning start counting seconds. Then, once you hear the thunder, convert you seconds to miles. This way you get a rough estimate of how far away the lightning is. Summary You hopefully learned more about lightning and thunder. Have I sucsesfully persuaded you that lightning is more violent and dangerous that other storms? Lightning is more dangerous because 1) Lightning is electric and could shock anyone. 2) Lightning occurs more often than other storms. 3) Thunder makes a rumbling sound that is very disturbing.

Transcript: Lightning 1 Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the atmosphere between clouds, the air, or the ground. In the early stages of development, air acts as an insulator between the positive and negative charges in the cloud and between the cloud and the ground. What Lightning is 2 You need cold air and warm air. When they meet, the warm air goes up. It makes thunderstorm clouds. The cold air has ice crystals and the warm air has water droplets. During the storm, the droplets and crystals bump together and move apart in the air. This rubbing makes static electrical charges in the clouds. The energy goes through the air. It goes to a place that has the opposite charge. This lightning bolt of energy that is let out is called a leader stroke. It can go from the cloud to the ground. How it forms 3rd degree burns Hair/Clothing may catch fire Ruptured Eardrums Cardiac Arrest Temporary or even permanent paralysis Personality Changes Mood Swings Brain Damage Death Possible Effects of being struck 3 4 Roy Cleveland Sullivan was struck by lightning 7 times between 1942 and 1977.Sullivan was a park ranger at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia Who got struck by lightning 5 The first strike happened in April 1942, the second strike didn't happen til 1969 while driving his truck. The third strike was a year later and Sullivan was in his front yard, the fourth strike was at a rangers station. In 1976, Sullivan got struck twice, and in 1977 he got struck while fishing.
