He doesn't have a everyday family, with children. The author describes his house with" it was like coming into a cold marbled room of a mausoleum after the moon has set. Complete darkness, not a hint of the silver world outside, the windows tightly shut, the chamber a tomb world where no sound could penetrate it. The author shows his house as a place where noting good happens, nothing good comes from it. Montag's House Quotes 1&2 Montag's House Paragraph Figurative "When Mildred ran from the parlor like a native fleeing an eruption of Vesuvius". The Vesuvius eruption was a famous volcano that erupted in AD 79 destroying the city of Pompeii and all of its residents. Bradbury used that allusion to give the readers a connection, if they knew about the eruption. The other quote, "play the man, Master Ridley : we shall this day light such a candle by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out", later on that page Beatty explains to Montag that "those words were spoken by a man named Latimer to Nicholas Ridley as they were being burnt alive at Oxford for heresy on October 16, 1555". The woman said it right before she killed herself with fire. 2 Quotes "Play the man, Master Ridley : we shall this day light such a candle by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out". Allusion Paragraph "The parlor was dead and Mildred kept peering in at it with a blank expression as Montag paced the floor and came back and squatted down and read a page as many as ten times, aloud". The author uses this personification and simile to show how Montag was lonely and felt left out. The metaphor "maybe the books can get us half out of the cave. They just might stop us from making the same damn insane mistakes", shows the big barrier between Montag and Mildred. He wants the truth, while she is happy to live through the lines of lies. Transcript: By: Venya Eckman Example 2: "Blazing" Example 1: "Blackened" One of the most prominent motifs of "Fahrenheit 451" is "Light versus Dark". "Light" can be used to represent knowledge. "Darkness" is the opposite of light, so it can represent ignorance. Montag's ex-society was a dark one since it was driven and controlled by entertainment. Furthermore, the best way for people to get information, books, had been outlawed. The only way for an individual to gain knowledge would be to go against the law, which creates a major conflict. When Montag reached Clarisse's home, he noticed something strange. The author writes, "When they reached her house all its lights were blazing"(13). The blazing lights symbolize that Clarisse's family is full of knowledge. Evidence for this claim is that Clarisse showed her intelligence earlier in the book, and also said that her family talks, which is extremely rare in their society because normal people are constantly watching television. Example 3: "Conflict" The main conflict of the story is actually an example of "Light versus Dark". Montag's inner conflict regarding whether or not he should educate himself using books is a prime example of knowledge battling ignorance. Montag saw the light that books carried and questioned whether or not they were worth breaking the law over. He could either stay in darkness, or enter the light. Motif The first example of the "Light versus Dark" motif is the second sentence. The book states "It was a pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed"(1). While blackened can just mean that the chemical makeup of the books were changed to ash, it has a deeper meaning. The books, or light, was destroyed, and the absence of light is darkness. The books were changed from things full of knowledge, to ignorant entities. The books were blackened both literally and metaphorically. Light vs. Dark

Transcript: These examples of this literary term indicate that the novel excellently uses this term to make it a truly good story. As all other good storybooks, this story has a great tale about good vs. evil. Along with other literature strategies, Light vs. Dark is a vital component for a good story. These are a few examples of light vs. dark elements, and they are great examples of this term. Dark (example#1) At the end of the story, after the bomb detonates, Montag's thought is about reaching the city at noon. This means that Montag, along with Granger and the other members of his group, are to go back to the city. The light element in this is that, because they plan on remaking society, there is hope that the future will be better than what Montag experienced his whole life.(pg.167) What is Light vs. Dark? Light vs. Dark is in a sense, good versus evil. Some may not know of it, however, this literary term is in almost every story. In Fahrenheit 451, there are many examples of Light vs. Dark. A very clear example of a dark event in the story includes the burning of the woman who decided to die with her books, than to live without them. This was a true dark event, seeing that Montag was "traumatized" by that event. Dark (example#2) Light (example #1) Conclusion Another example of dark in this novel includes the death of an antagonist in the story, Beatty. By: Gracie Glidewell Light Examples : Clarisse was the first to introduce Montag to light. She changed his view of the world and leads him to change his perspective of it and the books. Motif - In this example of the text, it describles the darkness of the firemen. In the novel, the firemen were always appeared by using dark colors. While in the book, they burn all of the books.
