Transcript: Colonial America The Colonists were constantly at war with the British. The Americans had Muskets, but they weren't very accurate. Most men were blacksmiths, builders, soldiers, and farmers The Americans usually had cabins and small farms. Children went to school for most of the day, then they would work on the family farm. Foods in the Northern Colonies. Foods and plants in the Southern colonies. Along the coast, whales could be hunted to make oil lamps. Fishing was also a big industry Exported goods from the colonies; tobacco, indigo, lumber, iron, and furs. Rifling makes the bullet spiral out of the gun making it much more accurate. Muskets had bayonets which were blades on the end of the gun. Bayonets gave soldiers more protection while they were loading the gun. Women stayed at home and did chores like making clothing. Tobacco was one of the most exspensive exsported products in the colonies. The first harvest of tobacco was worth over one million dollars in todays money. The military was made up of untrained soldiers that were farmers. Corn was easy to grow in the middle coloniesbecause the soil was thicker and richer than in the New England colonies. The colonists didn't want to be controlled by the British. Most big farms in the south were farmed by slaves. If you wanted a good, they were usualy exspensive. Tobacco is a big part of the trade in the colonies. They would trade it for big amounts of money. It was the crop that saved Jamestown. Children went to school after doing morning chores and then after school they would help more at their houses. Bayonets were put on the end of muskets to give protection to the sodiers while they are reloading. African slaves were brought into the colonies because they were already amune to diseases and knew how to grow rice. Furs like the Beaver pelt were very popular in England. The Beaver pelts were made into hats because they have a natural water repelant. Transcript: Colonial America How did people get to America? Who was here first? Extra Credit!!!! What does this map suggest about how people first came to America? (Back Arrow to see map again) The first inhabitants of the American continents were nomadic hunters and gathers. These nomads probably arrived in North America around 40,000 years ago, following a land bridge that formed between North America and Asia. It is believed that another group of humans migrated from Asia into North America around 12,000 years ago. Some scientits also think that some people might have used boats to follow ocean currents to the tip of South America, while others arrived following ice from Western Europe. As these various groups traveled into the new world following wild game, they spread out across the land, forming new cultures, and in some cases, complex civilizations. Which map is more accurate? Why? More Extra Credit!! Write a story using the symbols below. Be sure to write it in English as well. How did the first Europeans get here? History textbooks often claim Christopher Columbus discovered America. While Columbus was among the first Europeans (the Norse before him, and possibly the Chinese and an Irish monk) to explore the New World, he found that the Americas were already inhabited. Columbus hardly made it to the American continents first. Interested in the Norse (Vikings)? According to the Icelandic sagas ("Eirik the Red's Saga" and the "Saga of the Greenlanders"—chapters of the Hauksbók and the Flatey Book), the Norse started to explore lands to the west of Greenland only a few years after the Greenland settlements were established. In 985 while sailing from Iceland to Greenland with a migration fleet consisting of 400-700 settlers and 25 other ships (14 of which completed the journey), a merchant named Bjarni Herjólfsson was blown off course and after three days sailing he sighted land west of the fleet. Bjarni was only interested in finding his father's farm, but he described his discovery to Leif Ericson who explored the area in more detail and planted a small settlement fifteen years later. The sagas describe three separate areas discovered during this exploration: Helluland, which means "land of the flat stones"; Markland, "the land of forests", definitely of interest to settlers in Greenland where there were few trees; and Vinland, "the land of wine" (or as suggested by modern linguists "the land of meadows"), found somewhere south of Markland. It was in Vinland that the settlement described in the sagas was planted. All four of Erik the Red's children were to visit the North American continent, his sons Leif, Thorvald and Thorstein and their sister Freydis. One of the sons, Thorvald, died there. More about colonization? European nations came to the Americas to increase their wealth and broaden their influence over world affairs. The Spanish were among the first Europeans to explore the New World and the first to settle in what is now the United States. This is an engraving of Columbus meeting the native Cubans. By 1650, England had established a dominant presence on the Atlantic coast. The first colony was founded at Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. Jamestown was the first English colony in America to survive and become permanent. It was settled in 1607 and supported itself through tobacco farming. It was later the capital of Virginia and the site of the House of Burgesses. What is the most important thing to notice in the next pictute? Why is that important? Things did not go well at first. Many of the people who settled in the New World came to escape religious persecution. The Pilgrims, founders of Plymouth, Massachusetts, arrived in 1620. What is the most important thing to notice about the next picture? Why is that important? In both Virginia and Massachusetts, the colonists flourished with some assistance from Native Americans. New World grains such as corn kept the colonists from starving while, in Virginia, tobacco provided a valuable cash crop. Transcript: Why People Came to Colonial America Many people felt the laws of their government in Europe were too oppressive and they wanted to live where the citizens had more liberties and freedoms. Land Many countries in Europe had been at war with each-other for centuries. In the new world, people hoped to find peace and be able to live a quiet life. One of the main features about moving to America was being able to own lots of land. Something England was running out of. The colonists heard of all this land and wanted some for their famlies. Religious Freedom While some sought a new life, many were just in it for the riches, hoping that America was full of gold! For many, they simply wanted a way to support themselves and their families. They came to America to open businesses; most starting farms growning new crops such as cotton, tobacco, indigo and rice, which they did not have in Europe. While few in numbers, some came to practice religion without being punished. Many European Kings and Queens forced their citizens to have the same religion as they did. Transcript: Opportunity in Colonial America By Cam, Grant, Evan, and Sylvie Thesis: Opportunity in Colonial America is based on race, wealth, gender, and religion. Race Topic Black People Black - Rose Davis is Sentenced to a Life of Slavery 1715 - Rose Davis was born from an indentured white woman and a black man in 1946. - In 1715 Rose requested to be free but was instead sentenced to life of slavery. This type of treatment was the same around all black people. Their opportunities were not respected. White People White Song is written from the perspective of a young girl who is sent to Virginia against her will, where she faced a life of hunger and never ending work around 1689-1703 This document aims to show how life in Early America was tough and opportunities were few and far between no matter the race. It provides contrast to the idea that New England was a place of opportunity, showing that for some, New England was a place of great danger and suffering. Early Colonists did not enjoy many pleasures- the woman states in the song that she would gladly return to England. Some people living in New England weren’t necessarily free from the brutal class structures of England and Europe. Very little prosperity in Early America Native People Native Alibamo Mingo 1765 in the Americas Alibamo was Choctaw leader Created to share Native experience of the French losing to the British and leaving the Americas. Shows how the Natives were allies with the French and when they lost to the British the Natives were not happy. The Natives thought the British had no respect or wisdom in their government. The Author is the leader of the Choctaw tribe so he is biased to the Native opinion. He also focused on the good of the French and bad parts of the British. Likes the French because they had a good trade dynamic. Wealth: A person's wealth, especially inherited money, greatly impacted their opportunities in colonial America. Topic Eliza Lucas Eliza Lucas lived in South Carolina in the 1740. She became very wealthy through managing several plantations. Through this money she was able to enjoy many things. "My Papa... leaves it to me to choose our place of residence", "I have a little library...and the garden, which I am very fond of." Topic Eliza grew up in a wealthy family and received formal schooling in London before moving to South Carolina. The plantations she managed were inherited by her family. Eliza's inherited wealth gave her greater opportunity to make money and live comfortably in America. Topic Puritan Economics Wealth greatly impacted a person's opportunities, and Puritan New England did not make it easy to make money. "Puritan Economics", written by John Winthrop, details the case of Robert Keayne, who was tried for selling goods at a higher than legal price. Topic Puritan New England did not believe prices should fluctuate freely with Supply and Demand, and place heavy restrictions on trade. Gender Topic In 17th century colonial America, it wasn’t new for women to have one purpose and one purpose only. That purpose being to care for the added generation of their bloodline. Women were more or less treated like objects; a thing that just popped out a baby and did everything to raise the kid. Had an important role but rights were extremely little. Women’s rights decreased according to their ethnicity. Their rights also decreased according to their husband’s wealth or family wealth before getting married. In Samuel Sewall's diary he would document the times he spent during the Salem witch trials.Throughout Sam's diary he would record all of the people who had been accused of witchcraft and all of the times they had meetings regarding anything close to witchcraft. Majority of the people accused of witchcraft were women but there were some men accused of this act. People would try remedies to heal the ones who were in danger of being possessed into a witch. These documents from Samuel's diary would correlate with many other resources regarding gender and status because “weaker” or “different” parties would be blamed for what's wrong in the world, ending up with these groups of people walking on eggshells around the higher parties who are deciding whether or not these people have actually done anything wrong. Most of the women that were indentured servants would work in the upper class English man’s household, they would get sexually assaulted and if they got pregnant they would be forced to stay another year because of the “lost time” due to pregnancy and childbirth. Religion A persons religion affected the way they lived in colonial America.
