But Steve never wanted to lose his audience either, nor did he subscribe to the ideologies of high modernist mannerism. His music is full of top tunes, infectious rhythmic power, and bold, poster-paint colours. It communicates through the new contexts he created for it, whether through performing groups (he set up The Steve Martland Band to play his music), record labels (he was signed to Factory in the 1980s), and audiences.
