Learning intentions Todays' lesson collect, select and record geographical data and information by finding the gradient of various slopes Locates and describes the diverse features and characteristics of a range of places and environments In this lesson we will: Outline 1. Contour lines connect areas of equal vertical height. A contour interval is the vertical distance between two contour intervals What is Gradient? Gradient is the slope of a feature. Gradient therefore is the measure of the steepness of a feature like a mountain when you move between points. What is gradient? On a topographic map we see gradient in the contour lines. The closer the contour lines, the steeper the slope. The further away the less steep. We calculate gradient to see how high up we go per the distance we run or walk etc. Furthermore... How to calculate gradient IN REAL LIFE x 100 How to calculate gradient? To calculate gradient we use the formula Rise = the vertical height distance between the two points --> contour interval distance Run = the horizontal distance between the two points using the scale In real life this is what it would be: ON A TOPOGRAPHIC MAP Steps: 1. find the rise number by counting the contour distance between the two points. E.g. the height of the highest point - the height of the lowest point 2. find your run value by finding the distance between the two points using the scale. 3. put these answers into your fraction. Steps Steps 4. ensure they are the same units e.g. both the rise and run are in metres or are both in kilometers 5. put the fraction in your calculator and then times your answer by 100 OR rise divide by run and then multiply the answer by 100 6.
