Transcript: Author: James Waller Becoming Evil By Jeff Stewart ARUGMENT ARGUMENT "My central argument is that it is ordinary individuals, like you and me, are who commit extraordinary evil" (42) Waller backs up his thesis with many social psychology experiments from the 1960s like the Stanford Prision Experiment, and Milgram shock experiment. Also, he mentions several inhumane acts . How Waller Proves His Thesis How Waller Proves His Thesis Says that genocide occurs when a specific group, race or ethnicity is violently targeted. Things Mentioned Things Mentioned ORIGINS OF EVIL NATURE OF EXTRODINARY HUMAN EVIL Types of Evil: Natural Evil- evil not caused by other humans like natural disaters Human Evil- intentionaly harming of people by other people It is thought that many people who commit these acts are polarized because of the group they are a part of, these groups of course all have certain beliefs. These beliefs can be beneficial or detrimental to society. ORIGIN OF EVIL ORIGIN OF EVIL After Columbus "discovers" America in 1492 he begins taking control and colonizing mainland America. THE AMERICAN GENOCIDE THE AMERICAN GENOCIDE Soon after the colonization of and creation of the United States manifest destiny is installed into the citizens minds. CONTINUED CONTINUED it is estimated that over 15 million indiginous people lived in North America. Almost two-hundred years later of 90% of the population is gone. The Sand Creek Massacare The Sand Creek Massacare Between 500-600 tribe members were brutally murdered. Many of the men involved were put to trial and ones found guilty recived zero punishments. The Result The Result What we know about groups Beliefs become more extreme Group ploarization Blurs individual opinions/ideologies Diffusion of responsibility when an act is commited Makes risk takers riskier GROUP IDEOLOGY GROUP IDEOLOGY NAZI GERMANY NAZI GERMANY Pre WWII the German people all had some form of antisemitism towards Jews Only 1% of the German population were Jewish and were mostly apart of the upper class Once Hitler comes to power, He uses the preexsisting antisemitism in Germans to persuade votes in his favor During the Nurmenburg Trials many of the defendents simply lacked "empathy and consience" (89) Interesting enough many of the defendants were IQ tested and scoring a high of 143 and low of 106 Average IQ for someone with a doctorate is around 125 NAZI LEADERS NAZI LEADERS These leaders were considered geniuses and all considered sane by psyschologists How do sane intelligent people who know right from wrong commit such atrocities? CONTINUED CONTINUED Soon after Aldolf Eichmans arrest in South America, he was soon flew into Jerusalem and put on trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes Eichman defended himself by stating "I was only following orders" During the trials, Stanley Milgram wanted to see what it took to make an average person kill someone OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY OBEDIENCE TO AUTHORITY Creator of shock experiment Social psychologist and professor at Yale Proves that you will obey someone if they seem to be the authority figure STANLEY MILGRAM STANLEY MILGRAM SHOCK EXPERIMENT SHOCK EXPERIMENT 65% of ordinary people will comply to an authority figure and complete a task despite what or who it may harm. Two states of mind: Agentic- following orders of the authority figure Autonomous- being under your own control and decisions WHAT CAN THIS TEACH US? WHAT CAN THIS TEACH US? Psychologist and professor at Stanford University He wanted to find out what makes the prision guards so brutal to inmates PHILIP ZIMBARDO PHILIP ZIMBARDO Consisted of 12 inmates and 12 prison guards the 2 week experiment only lasts 6 days Guards recived sunglasses and police uniform Prisoners were stripped of their names and recived a number with prison outfits Guards and prisoners quickly fall into their roles STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT Zimbardo learns that its not always the person thats bad its the situation that makes the person bad People will conform to the role that they are asigned and with power these people would test what they can get away with RESULTS RESULTS Island of Timor is an island located four-hundred miles north of Australia. Here there are two parts of the island: west and east Timor. Throughout its exsistance, the east side of the island has always been poor and underdeveloped.
