Transcript: Seven Elements of Buddhism By Emily Hunziker History History Buddhism was created 2,500 years ago by Siddhartha Guatama, who was an Indian Prince. One day he was tired of living a life of luxury knowing that there is so much suffering and misery going on in the world, and this idea leads him to go on a spiritual quest. This quest lasted years, he studied with teachers and knowledge keepers but wasn't able to find the answers he was looking for. One day, he began to meditate under a bodhi tree and refused to stop until he felt enlightenment to his question. After 49 days of meditation, he experienced a realization that led to the enlightenment he was searching for. People now also refer to this enlightenment as 'nirvana'. People began to refer to him as 'The Buddha' and 'The Enlightened One' because of his knowledge and wise mind. Sacred Texts Sacred Texts Buddhists do not have a set collection of scriptures, but there are three different Buddhist collections that are seen as the main writings and sacred texts that are central to their faith. These three scriptures are the Pali Canon, the Chinese Canon, and the Tibetan Canon. The Pali Canon is the most sacred and important scripture of the three, it is also known as the Tripitaka. The Tripitaka is separated into three parts, which are referred to as baskets. These baskets are called the Vinaya Pitaka, the Sutta Pitaka, and the Abhidhamma Pitaka. These three sections either contain the words of Buddha, the monastic regulations, and the scholastic analytic work of living a Buddhist life. Symbols and Materials Symbols and Materials The Buddha reminds Buddhists where they are trying to reach and become in life. Buddhists believe he is there guide to a life of enlightenment. In buddhism there are hand gestures known as mudras,each gestures has a specific meaning. So each buddha has a different meaning based off of its mudra pose. Another symbol is the bodhi tree, it reminds Buddhists of the quest Siddhartha Gautama experienced and the period of time he spent meditating to find a satisfactory answer to his question. Another important symbol is the lion, it symbolizes the life of royalty that Buddha was born into, and It reminds us of the life he gave up in search for enhlightenment. It also compares the significance of his lessons to the roar of a lion. Lions are very important in Buddhism and can be found at temple enterances and other sacred places. The final symbol are the Four Guardian Kings. Each of these kings or guardian gods watch over one of the four directions of the world. Rituals and Traditions Buddhisms traditions and rituals are done to further ones spiritual connection to their faith. Some of the rituals and traditions buddhists practice are chanting, bowing, and devotion to buddha and his sacred teachings. Buddhists also go on pilgrimages to significant locations in Buddha's life. Some pilgrimages include Lumbini which is Buddha's birthplace, Bodh Gaya which is where Buddha recieved his enlightenment, the deer park in Varanasi where Buddha delivered his first sermon, and finally Kusinara which is where Buddha experienced his last feelings of nirvana and passed away. Rituals and Traditions Doctrines Doctrines Buddhism follows many doctrines within the religions sacred scriptures. Two very important doctrines Buddhists follow are the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path. Buddhists learn about doctrines to live a more morally good life to achieve nirvana. The Four Noble Truths are comprised of Buddha's teachings and explain the truth of why humans suffer, the cause of suffering, the end of suffering, and the path that leads one to end their suffering. Within the scriptures, it explains that suffering exists in everyones lives, and that theres a reason for it, but it also has an eventual end and there is a cause or reason to bring it to an end. Buddhists also follow basics rules, to Christians these rules are like the Ten Commandments. They are called the Five Precepts are they are to: - Refrain from taking life - Refrain from wrong speech - Refrain from taking what is not given - Refrain from intoxicants that can cloud the mind - Refrain from the misuse of the senses or sexual pleasure Myths Myths Buddhism can be confusing and hard to understand as someone who is not Buddhist themself. Because of this confusion and misconception, many myths have been created over the centuries that Buddhism has been a religion. Some myths include: - All Buddhists are vegetarian - Buddha is a god - Buddhists pray to a god - Buddhas 'enlightenment' is the same a Christians heaven - The core practice in Buddhism is intense and deep meditation - Buddism is not a religion, but a philosophy - Buddhists try to speak to the dead through their rituals and practices Death and Afterlife Death and Afterlife A good death to Buddhists is a calm and peaceful passing, this is so the person passing away can reflect on their lives deeds and actions without worry or what comes next.
