What they need to survive: Full sunlight and acidic soil Callicore eunomia is a pretty butterfly from Neotropic ecozone (South America). The first description was in 1853 by Hewitson. The wingspan is about 3.0 – 4.0 cm. This butterfly is a member of the family NYMPHALIDAE. Callicore eunomia is black. It has a broad, orange or red area on its forewings. Transcript: Final Project I searched online and at local garden nurseries to find which plants were recommended for butterflies. I chose two types of butterfly bush (orange and purple), purple cone flowers, bee balm and milkweed. I filled in with some other fragrant plants that would attract them in. I also provided a water source by putting in a small shepherd's hook with a bright orange bird bath. What I hope to see next summer!! I chose to do this project because I have heard so much about the Monarch butterflies struggling to survive. I wanted to do my part to give them places to make their cocoons. This is why I planted milkweed. Milkweed is the only place a Monarch will cocoon. I then choose types of flowers that many butterflies, hummingbirds and bees would love. I wanted to do my little part to provide a happy place for God's beautiful creatures. Photos of Plants Butterfly Garden I have wanted to have a butterfly garden for a long time now. This summer I took the old sandbox my kids no longer use and turned it into a garden that butterflies, hummingbirds and bees will enjoy. by Anne Klaers Old Sandbox Process Milkweed will not bloom until next summer. I first cleaned out all the weeds. I then arranged the rocks in the back where I was putting the milkweed. Then I covered the entire thing with newspaper to keep weeds down. You also should place nectar plants close together to minimize distance for the nectaring butterflies. Shelter Shelter Shrubs and trees not only provide you with some shade, but also protection from the wind for the butterflies. The trees and shrubs can also be food for the caterpillars! Water: Butterflies need water, but not very much. Puddling stations are recommended for a good butterfly garden. Puddling stations are damp areas of dirt or sand protected from the wind and easily seen. Sun: Since butterflies are cold blooded they start their days warming up their tiny bodies.
