Agile Coaching Dojo

Transcript: AGILE COACHING DOJO 2 mins 3 mins 15 mins 5 mins How do you get to be a great musician? It helps to know the theory, and to understand the mechanics of your instrument. It helps to have talent. But ultimately, greatness comes from practicing; applying the theory over and over again, using feedback to get better every time. When we're constantly on client sites, we don't have the opportunity to practice, or the space to stretch ourselves. It's never safe to fail, or to try out new skills. The Dojo is safe place to practice and learn our agile coaching skills, getting advice from our peers. An idea borrowed from Rachel Davies: Aims Build Trust Kata, Coach, Feedback, Repeat As an agile coach I have a team that don't understand the value of pair programming. How do I convince them to try this, without having to mandate it? Asking open questions Example Kata: As an agile coach, I am working on a project which is falling behind schedule, everybody knows it, but no action is being taken. How do I get the team to take corrective action? G R O W 1. What happens in Dojo, stays in Dojo 2. Leave your relics at the door. "Forget" all your previous knowledge and explain things as if you're facing the issues for the first time, so that everyone can share your learning. 3. Don't interrupt the coaches whilst they're practicing. Be silent until they're finished. OBSERVER Observing A Coding Dojo is: The endpoint. Set a clear aim. Where we are now? What options do we have? Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.
