Safety Construction

Transcript: In order to know which way to go, we were blessed to be given the following "road signs". With this idea, the Contractor will one by one start putting up steps to form the building blocks of the plant. The Client, being the one who sets the goal, serves as the margin of what they want to happen. For easier and more efficient interdiscipline coordination, representatives from each discipline were gathered into one floor. Having this set-up, inputs can easily be informed without generally the need to schedule a meeting. For close vendor coordination, meeting rooms for teleconference are made available for every discipline that needs it. FPD and LL In order to guarantee the safety of everyone, or at least minimize the negative effects of H2S poisoning, the Client has required everyone to undergo Shelter and H2S Training before doing any site survey. Factory Acceptance Test and Inspection and Test Procedure Shelter and H2S Training DEM1 and DEM2 Engineering for Fueled up by previous positive and negative experiences, these two information are our "guidelines" in making sure our "drive" is as smooth as we intended it to be. Before accepting any Vendor's design, each discipline makes sure that the Vendor has agreed to comply to every test and inspection procedure as stated in the discipline's Requisitions. Before and during a project execution, each discipline was given a compilation of FPD list and LL. With these, items related to each discipline served as the checkpoints as to what should and shouldn't be done in order not to commit the same mistakes as before and in order to implement what has been done right in the past that has led to a good project execution. These are the items that SHALL be followed and are not to be deviated. Flawless Project Delivery and Lessons and Learned The path to the destination is mapped out and made smooth by close coordination between the Vendors and of course, within each discipline involved in the project. The first step in pursuing the vision (STAR TREC Project) is to establish a partnership between a Client and Contractor. Partnership between Client and Contractor GOAL ZERO The road to the terminal may be smooth but forked roads are present and are sometimes inevitable. Neglecting or taking these "road signs" for granted can cause serious difficulty in the end or worse, fatality. Close Vendor and Interdiscipline Coordination One example is the recently concluded IPF and DSR. These safety related studies were implemented and participated to by all disciplines of the Contractor together with the Client and some related vendors. In order to have a close watch on the compliance to these statements, a Shell Audit was recently concluded and will be followed in a few weeks time. One by one, every statement under DEM requirements were verified if incorporated in the deliverables. A follow-up audit will happen to verify if these requirements were actually implemented. Having a companion and fuel for a drive does not guarantee that we will arrive at our destination. Safe Construction Design and Engineering Manual 1 and 2 But, having the Vendor "say" that they can comply to our requirements doesn't guarantee that they will. With this possibility in mind, FAT will be done to verify if all procedures were strictly adhered to by the Vendor. IPF, DSR and HAZOP Instrument Protective Function, Desktop Safety Review and Hazard and Operability Study Thank you and have a happy and safe driving! Upon proper preparation and successful implementation of every "road signs", we will reach our target for a GOAL ZERO. FAT and ITP To establish a good relationship, activities such as teambuildings and workshops were done to build a strong bond between these two. Furthermore, having the Client and the Contractor in one area also contributed a great deal for this partnership. This is to inform everyone regarding the hazards in the plant, the effects of H2S poisoning and how to react during a possible leak in the area.

Inadequate scaffolding Lack of edge protection, Unprotected openings in buildings, Lack of edge protection in roof work, Dangerous demolition work, and Inappropriate use of ladders and hoists The lack of toe boards on scaffolding Lack of tool belts for workers Bad storage and stacking Poor housekeeping WHAT ARE THE MAIN HAZARDS IN CONSTRUCTION? FALLS FROM HEIGHT Worldwide, construction workers are three times more likely to be killed and twice as likely to be injured as compared to workers in other occupations. However, this can be lessened if those entering in the profession of construction will really do correct safety measures. HOW DANGEROUS IS CONSTRUCTION? This can be due to cable strikes on buried services, or to contact with overhead cables. Although hazards, risks and dangers are present in construction sites, it is always important for us to be responsible in our actions. We should always do our best to be safe at all times. Enterprises should investigate all the causes of industrial accidents, including minor accidents and near-accidents, to identify measures that can be taken to increase worker safety. Minor accidents should be regarded as a wake up call, warning us to take action. Studying minor accidents and near misses makes it possible to update and if necessary adapt the relevant safety procedures before a serious accident occurs. All incidents and near accidents have to be taken into account when the risk assessment is carried out or up-to-date. WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES OF ACCIDENTS IN A CONSTRUCTION SITE? These are probably the most common forms of accidents in construction: WHY IS SAFETY IMPORTANT? CRUSH INJURIES So what can safety do for you? The benefits of maintaining a safe work environment are many, but first and foremost, safety is about what you can do to protect your workers. “It’s the right thing to do. Employers should send their workers home in the same condition they came in." (Todd Detro) No one can argue with the fact that workplace safety is important, yet it’s often unintentionally overlooked, leaving workers and others on the job site exposed to risk. Safety is also important so that we can identify unsafe acts and conditions and provide practical solutions for minimizing those risks. These occur in unsafe excavations often lead to fatal accidents or serious injuries. They occur when there is inadequate support for trench sides, especially after rainfalls, or when vehicles are operating too close to the edge. Buildings and walls may collapse when supporting structures are undermined. Safety, in lay man's term, means freedom from danger or harm. It is the condition of being safe from, undergoing of causing hurt, injury or loss. AMONG THE DANGERS OF CONSTRUCTION ARE: BEING STRUCK BY FALLING OBJECTS, MATERIALS OR TOOLS

Transcript: Construction Safety Group Topic2 E Arellano, Jeanrilou V. Ayuban, Charys Jade D. Linsag, Edyl Kim B. Topic Outline Introduction to Construction Safety The Importance of Safety on Construction Sites > Objectives 10 Simple Construction Site Safety Rules References Construction Site Safety Introduction Construction site safety is an aspect of construction-related activities concerned with protecting construction site workers and others from death, injury, disease or other health-related risks. The leading causes of construction site fatalities are falls, electrocutions, crush injuries, and caught-between injuries. Construction Site Construction sites are dynamic activities where workers engage in many activities that may expose them to a variety of safety hazards, such as falling objects, working from rooftops or scaffolding, exposure to heavy construction equipment, or the use of temporary electrical circuits while operating electrical equipment and machinery in damp locations. Construction activities at Princeton University comprise a wide range of activities including construction of new buildings, renovation of existing facilities, and major repair or alterations of building systems. Through implementation of safe work practices, training, and compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, the Workplace Safety program aims to identify, control, or eliminate construction-related hazards. Safety is a vital part of finishing your project on or under budget. Downtime is costly, as is finding replacement workers when someone cannot do their job after an accident. Worker’s compensation claims and lawsuits can drive up your insurance costs. Focusing on safety helps keep your costs low. The Importance of Safety on Construction Sites Objectives •Safety on Construction Sites Protects the Public •Safety Reduces Work-Related Accidents •Decrease Time and Money Lost After an Accident •Increase Compliance with a Dedication to Safety 10 Simple Construction Site Safety Rules Construction sites are dangerous places to work. Follow these 10 simple construction site safety rules to keep yourself, and others, safe. From wearing your PPE, to following procedures, you can help make your site a safer place to work, and prevent accidents. When you enter the site, make sure you have the PPE you need. 1. Wear your PPE at all times Each site has its unique hazards and work operations. No two sites are exactly the same. Make sure you know what is happening so that you can work safely. 2. Do not start work without an induction Construction work is messy. Slips and trips might not seem like a major problem compared to other high-risk work happening on the site, but don't be fooled. 3. Keep a tidy site Actions speak louder than words. Especially on construction sites where one wrong move could put you in harm's way. Set a good example, think safe and act safely on site. 4. Do not put yourself or others at risk Follow construction safety signs and procedures. 5. Follow safety signs and procedures Make sure your work area is safe. Know what is happening around you. 6. Never work in unsafe areas If you notice a problem, don’t ignore it, report it to your supervisor immediately. 7. Report defects and near misses If somethings not working, or doesn't look right, follow rule number 7 and report it. Don't try and force something, or alter something, if you're trained to or supposed to. 8. Never tamper with equipment One tool does not fit all. Using the correct tool for the job will get it done quicker, and most importantly, safer. 9. Use the right equipment If you need help or further information speak to your supervisor 10. If in doubt, ask References https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Construction_site_safety https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.ny-engineers.com/blog/the-importance-of-safety-on-construction-sites%3fhs_amp=true https://www.haspod.com/blog/construction/10-simple-construction-site-safety-rules

Transcript: Construction Mr. Ernstes CONSTRUCTION Safety Lab General Safety For the Lab/Job site General Safety # 1 rule for job site safety is USE COMMON sense. If something feels dangerous it probably is. Ask the instructor for assistance. If you see something, say something, usually operators simply forgot or don't know Safety Glasses Safety Glasses When should you wear safety glasses? You should wear safety glasses anytime you are in a room that has the potential for tools/equipment to be in use. Also if you are outdoors in the general vicinity of tools being used. You should NOT take safety glasses off just because someone has stopped using equipment. Clothing Clothing Safety When working in the lab you should not wear... Rings Long sleeves Watches Bracelets or anything else on your hands/wrist/forearm area Open toed shoes should not be worn in the lab Long hair should be put up or tucked in and extra caution taken while operating equipment Baggy clothes also need to be tucked in while operating equipment Behavior Laboratory Behavior What kind of behavior is tolerated in the Lab? Horseplay, rough housing, wrestling, or any other form of hands on play is NEVER allowed in the lab. Proper Safety zones should always be maintained around equipment, to minimize operator distraction You are responsible to maintain a safe work environment, if you see a broken machine or hazard please immediately contact the instructor. Do NOT wait for someone else to do it. General Equipment Safety Equipment Safety Blade Safety Be Cautious with Blades When cutting keep a safe distance from blades, fingers should be no closer than 2-3 inches. If a cut requires closer contact then use a push stick. Do not use damaged or dull blades, inspect blades before for each use. Guards Guards Proper working guards should be used and maintained at all times. Machines with adjustable guards, band saw, should be set to approximately 1/4 of an inch above the workpiece. Machine usage Machine usage How do you properly use a machine? Always use the correct tool for the job. The person operating the equipment should always be the one to turn it on and off. A machine should NEVER be left running. While operating equipment students should never look away and should avoid all distractions. Emergency Situations Emergency Situation Avoidance Avoiding Emergency Situations How to avoid Emergency Situations Follow all safety rules Be confident and know what you're doing Do NOT distract others Avoid any potential distractions Response Responding to an emergency What should you do if there is an emergency situation If an injury occurs STAY CALM and inform the instructor Move back and listen for orders from the instructor Do not attempt to clean up any blood or bodily fluids Please report all injuries to the instructor no matter how minor it seems
