Transcript: Fighting fires can be just a small part of a firefighter's everyday work. Only one in three calls to the fire and rescue service is about a fire, and the services deal with many kinds of emergency and non-emergency situations. Their work includes pumping out floodwater, attending chemical spills and helping at road, rail and air crashes - including emergency casualty care. Fire and rescue services also rescue people who are trapped in buildings and lifts. Some organisations, such as the British Airports Authority (BAA) and the Defence Fire Service, which provides cover at military and Ministry of Defence sites, maintain their own independent fire brigades. provide advice on fire prevention advise people on fire escape routes and fire hazards in the home inspect premises to make sure they meet fire safety regulations work with schools - teaching pupils, for example, about the dangers of fireworks and matches (Ham, 2012) (Eyre,2012) Public 1: "I think they are a very brave service who need more credit for the work they do! they are not just a fire service they are a fire and rescue service so they dont just put out fires they help with other sittuations such as road accidents, floods, search and rescue, and general problems that occur in everday life, the fire and rescue service is a necessary service for the public and without them the community would be a less safer place!" "They have a good response time, I once required the fire and rescue service to rescue me from a chimney fire! they arrived within minutes and put out the fire quick and efficiently, one of the best public services" COMMUNITY SAFETY Public 2: Devon and Somerset fire service aim to keep you safe when you're at work, on holiday, travelling along our network of roads or in your home. They are providing a community safety service to help prevent incidents from occurring, to protect the communities they serve and if all the preventative measures fail the rescue service is available to respond 24/7 to emergency incidents. They also work hard to ensure that they minimise the wider impact on society of emergency incidents. The fire service work close together with their partner agencies such as the police and third sector charities to ensure the public have access to all the appropriate information and to help reduce the risks of emergencies. THE ROLE OF THE SERVICE " During the winter months last year floods around Devon had become a common site! this had caused blockages to some drains outside my house, I had rang the councial on numerus occasions to unblock the drains in case of more floods but nothing was done about the problem, well the worst situation had occured and the heavens let loose and rain was rushing into my front door ankle deep! recycling bins where floating around so I phoned for the fire service and they couldn't come quick enough, they unblocked the drains which should have been sorted by the councial, they saved my house and went out of their way to help us out! a great service !" (Greenway,2012) THE SERVICE DONT PLAY WITH FIRE! Fire fighters also pay a role in educating the public in proventing fires and safety within their own homes; THE MISSION THE FIRE SERVICE Devon & Somerset fire and Rescue Service have a mission, this mission is to be an established modern, flexible and responsive fire and rescue service meeting local, regional and national needs. This mission is called ‘Acting to protect and save’ DSFRS plan to achieve this mission by 2014 this will be achieved by adapting and managing the resources the fire and rescue service has access to and by committing to working in partnerships. If this goal is achieved the local communities will be safer through the provision prevention, protection and emergency response arrangements that reflect the local community risks. These changes will be clearly noticed by the communities through targeted prevention and protection activities this will help get the public involved in the mission to become a better rescue service. Devon and Somerset aim to provide a range of services that include; .
