The robot dog would compete in soccer matches and approximately 150,000 units were sold Released in 2005, Big Dog was designed and created to serve as a “pack mule” for a solider or Marine on the battle field. The robot is about the size of a large dog and can carry a load of up to 340 pounds. An updated version of BigDog was released in 2008 PackBot Predator Drone On September 7th 2005, a Predator Drone defended a United States Military base from a group of Iraqi Insurgents. It launched two hellfire missels killing 11 insurgents and wounding atleast 4 more. In 2007 there were 4 predator drone attacks killing 51 insurgents PackBot saw its first real action in the aftermath of the September 11th 2001 attacks, as it searched through the rubble of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. The US Military also used them shortly thereafter in Afghanistan to search caves and buildings for insurgents, and to investigate anti-personnel mines ASIMO had a significant upgrade in 2005, that allowed him to run twice as fast, interact with humans, and perform basic tasks like holding a platter and serving food. In 2001 the very first roomba came to market. It is a robot that vacuums your household floor all by itself. This sold over two point five million units to this day. Teams are given six weeks to complete a robot to overcome the challenges each game provides. This year's challenge was FIRST Stronghold which involved crossing various obstacles and shooting boulders (10" diameter foam balls) into goals. In addition to the robot game, teams compete for the Chairman's Award. This is the most prestigious award in FIRST. The team which wins this award has had the greatest measurable impact on their community. It is a great honor to win this award. FRC is one of the four divisions of FIRST. FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology and heavily emphasizes the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), business, leadership, animation, and effective communication skills. FRC focuses on helping high school students develop these skills through a robot game and a competition for the Chairman's Award. Merrimack High School's robotics team, Chop Shop 166, is an FRC team. We actively market ourselves and contribute to STEM outreach all year, but we heavily emphasize the first two months of the calendar year as we prepare for each year's robot game.
