FAU is also a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. History of FAU Before the campus was built, it was a vacant U.S airbase. The son of a prominent Fort Lauderdale attorney and bank president, Tom Fleming stood before the board of control on Jan. 18 1957 and made is proposal. Which was then passed, the air base would be home to what is now Florida Atlantic University. In September 1964, the University opened it's doors to the public.
