Green Construction

Transcript: Whole Tree Architecture (WTA) is a type of architecture in which trees are kept intact and used in replace of milled lumber, steel, and other commercial and industrial structural supports. In spite of using trees, Whole Tree Architecture is considered "green" because it actually has less negative impact on the Earth than do standard houses. Ecological Benefits By using local resources, we are able to walk a forest with a building design in mind and select individual trees to harvest. Each tree is chosen both for its structural and design integrity AND for the effect that its removal will have on the forest left standing around it. Often the selection will be based as much on thinning an overcrowded stand or managing an invasive species as it will on that tree being the nearest with a 10 inch diameter trunk. Economic Benefits For the building client, whole tree buildings can compete favorably with conventional construction while offering a more durable and fireproof structure and a higher level of craftsmanship. From the perspective of the community – whole tree construction invests a greater proportion of its costs into local jobs and materials than conventional construction and also promotes healthy forest management for local timber resources. Strength & Safety Tree cellulose is a self-replicating carbon nano-fiber produced primarily from air, water and sunlight. Structural testing of small diameter round timbers conducted by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory found that small diameter round timber is 50% stronger in axial loading and bending than a comparable cross-sectional area of milled lumber. This is due in part to the fact that milling violates a tree’s concentric, continuous and spiraling fibers removing the strongest outer layers of the tree, which are naturally pre-tensioned to resist wind shear. Structural testing by the USDA Forest Products Laboratory has found that “small diameter round timber” or what we call whole trees have a comparable weight to strength ratio in compression as steel and twice that of steel in tension. Pros: Whole Tree harvests global warming by replacing steel in large commercial and institutional buildings. Whole Trees are more than one hundred times as abundant as millable old-growth trees. Whole Trees have by far the lowest embodied energy of any structural material. Whole Trees have a similar weight to strength ratio as steel in compression and twice the strength of steel in tension Whole Trees have 150% the strenght of milled lumber. Whole Trees construction uses a tree's natural architecture of branching connections and curved forms for structural advantages. Whole Trees uses 200 mill years of evolutionary engineer and environmental testing One ton of Whole Trees timber sequestors 1.5 tons of CO2 Whole Trees are the only structural material which sequestors CO2 Cons: EXPENSIVE!! (1.5x - 3x the price of regular homes) Not suited for all landscapes (picky) The systems of a Whole Tree house, say like the water/sewage and electricity lines, are the same as regular homes. Types of buildings WT can be applied to: Commercial Residential Greenhouse/Agriculture Building Components An awesome Green Construction Some examples: Whole Tree

Transcript: Straw bale building typically consists of stacking rows of bales (often in running-bond) on a raised footing or foundation, with a moisture barrier or capillary break between the bales and their supporting platform. Bale walls can be tied together with pins of bamboo, rebar, or wood (internal to the bales or on their faces), or with surface wire meshes, and then stuccoed or plastered, either with a cement-based mix, lime-based formulation, or earth/clay render Alternatively, bale buildings can have a structural frame of other materials, usually lumber or timber-frame, with bales simply serving as insulation and plaster substrate, ("infill" or "non-load bearing" technique), which is most often required in northern regions and/or in wet climates. In northern regions, the potential snow-loading can exceed the strength of the bale walls. In wet climates, the imperative for applying a vapor-permeable finish precludes the use of cement-based stucco commonly used on load-bearing bale walls. Additionally, the inclusion of a skeletal framework of wood or metal allows the erection of a roof prior to raising the bales, which can protect the bale wall during construction, when it is the most vulnerable to water damage in all but the most dependably arid climates. A combination of framing and load-bearing techniques may also be employed, referred to as "hybrid" straw bale construction Straw Bale is a philosophy of architecture which promotes harmony between human habitation and the natural world through design approaches so sympathetic and well integrated with its site that buildings, furnishings, and surroundings become part of a unified, interrelated composition. However, some templates may cost more money depending on the complexity of the game. Classroom Games that Make Test Review and Memorization Fun! (n.d.). The, decide and create a series of questions that are to be asked during the game. 3. By hyper linking certain answers to different slides, the game jumps from slide to slide while playing the game. 4. This kind of setup is normally seen as a simple quiz show game. Popular game templates include: Family Feud Millionaire Jeopardy and other quiz shows. http://www.free-power-point-templates.com/deal-powerpoint-template/ Quick video on template "Millionaire" PowerPoint Games Some games are easier to make compared to others If users are unsure whether or not downloading certain templates is safe, you can actually make your own game by just simply using PowerPoint. add logo here References Example of a Family Feud Template PowerPoint Games are a great way to introduce new concepts and ideas You can create a fun, competitive atmosphere with the use of different templates You can change and rearrange information to correlate with the topic or idea being discussed. Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.
