The blood then travels back through the pulmonary vein and fills the lungs with no other place to go. Pulmonary edema occurs . Person will have shortness of breath since lungs are not able to expand with excess fluid Congestive Heart Failure Normal Heart Structure Normal Rhythm of Heart Congestive Heart Failure Causes of Heart Failure Left sided Heart failure Right Sided Heart failure Coronary Artery disease Treatment lifestyle changes- losing weight if obese, exercise, quit smoking, get lots of rest, change daily diet, take prescribed medications, and follow up every three to six months with a cardiologist. Intra- aortic balloon pump- when balloon is inserted in the aorta to improve blood circulation by opening up artery and allowing blood to pass more sufficiently Normal Structure Four valves: Bisucpid valve, tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve semilunar vavle and aortic semilunar valve. 4 chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left artium, left ventricle Congestive Heart Failure Definition: heart can not pump enough blood to meet body's needs. Sinoatrial node- sends electrical signal to atria causing to contract. Sends blood from atria to ventricles. Atrioventricular node- sends electrical signal to the ventricles which sends blood out of hear into artery. Allows for the healthy lub dub sound Normal Heart Rhythm Causes of Heart Failure Prior heart Disease- coronary artery disease Weakened left side of heart Weakened right side of the heart Coronary Artery Disease Right Side Heart Weakness References The walls of the right side are weak causing back flow of blood when the heart contracts. The excess blood travels to the lower extremeties through the inferior vena cava. This causes edema in the feet, legs, and abdomen in severe cases due to fluid build up. Treatment Narrowing of blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart due to obstructions such as plaque build up in the arteries. Since the obsrtuctions slow down blood flow the heart does not pump an adequate amount of blood to the rest of the body.
