Teenage Pregnancy

Transcript: A growing problem in the United States has been teenage pregnancy. After seeing the lowest teenage pregnancy rate in 2003, recent years have seen a serious increase in teenage pregnancies. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED IMMEDIATELY. In 2007, 19,615 girls between 15-19 got pregnant. (married or unmarried) In 2007 the rate was 63 pregnancies per 1,000. (15.87%) The fact of the matter is when a teenage student becomes pregnant, more than 50% of them drop out of school. When a teenager becomes pregnant, she most often has to drop out of school. Without an education, teenagers limit their future opportunities to support themselves and their children. 5 ways to reduce the teenage pregnancy problem 1. Condoms given out at all schools If abstinence is not practiced, then condoms would atleast prevent a pregnancy. 2. Schools require sex education classes. Teenager learns to respect the human body. Teenager learns the risk of unprotected sex. Teenager learns emotional and physical aspects of sex. 3. Family values taught in home, school, and community Respect for the family unit. Respect for marriage. Respect for your partner. 4. Schools require a course to educate teens on teen pregnancy. Teaches the realities of life. Teaches consequences of becoming a teen mom. Teaches that parenting is a life- changing event. 5.Improve communication skills between parents and teenagers Develops a close and open relationship. Communicates the value of a good education. Talks about the dangers of risk- taking concering sex. Teaches moral values and ethics concering sex. DOWN TO THE NUMBERS 79% of teenagers who become pregnant are unmarried. 80% of teen pregnancies are unintended. 25% of teen mothers have a second child within two years of first birth. Our Community In Greenville, North Carolina there are 42.2 pregnancies per 1,000 teens. (23.7%) Social, Educational, and Financial costs of teen pregancy The United States spends 7$ billion dollars each year due to the costs of teen pregnancy. By age 30, only 1.5% of women who had pregnancies as a teenager have a college degree. Within the first year of becoming teen mothers, one-half of unmarried teen mothers go on welfare. How does the U.S.A Teen Pregnancy Match up to other countries? The United States has the highest teen abortion rate then other countries. United states had twice the teen pregnancie rate as Canada. Both Germany and France have a teen pregnancie rate is eight times lower then the United States What do teens know about sexual activity? 82% feel that teens should not be sexually active. 72% agreed that teens that are sexually active should have access to birth control. 73% feel that being a virgin is not something to be embarresed about. Our group thinks that if people use our 5 solutions to teen pregnancie then there could be a drastic drop in teenage pregnaices across the country even the world. The Goal that people should set is to make teenagers aware of what they are doing. Not scare them, BUT MAKE THEM AWARE. With all of these high school students to be well educated would help build our countries future instead of having a set back from pregnancie. More than half of all mothers on welfare had their first child as a teenager. In fact, two- thirds od families began by a young, unmarried mothers are poor. The daughter of young teen mothers are 3 times more likely to become teen mothers themselves. Did you know that3in 10 teen girls in the US will get pregnant at least once before age 20? That's about 745,000 teen pregancies each year. Yikes. Parenthood is the leading reason why teen girls dorp out of school; after all,it's really diffcult tojuggle homework and a baby. Less than half of teen mothers ever graduate from high school and fewer than 2% earn a college degree by age 30.About one- fourth of teen moms a second child within 24months of the first birth - which can further delay their ability to finish school or keep a job. Teen Preanancy Babies are great - they're cute and cuddly and they love you.But they're also needy and selfish they want all your time and attention and they want it NOW. You may think having a will make your relationship even stronger, but the is 8 out of 10 fathers don't marry the mothers of their child. It's also true that these absent father pay less than $800annually for child support, often because they are poor themselves and and can't afford legitimate support payment. Start by thinking it though it carefully yourself. Are you ready to have sex? Delay Sex: Not sex at all is only 100% effective method of preventing pregnancy and STIs. Use Contraception:you do choose to have sex, you need to make sure that you use protection correctly every single time you have sex .

PREVENTING PREGNANCY: There are many ways in preventing pregnancy these are some types in perventing it: Behavioral - Withdrawl ( pull out ) Bancier - Condom: 98% effective Hormonal - Ring Patch Arm injection Abstinence ( no sex )- Male Reproductive System: Connections: In order for the sperm not to get into the females vagina the male uses a condom and it keeps the sperm from getting in contact with the fallopian tubes. The sperm is made in the testicles. How the sperm survives is by the prostate, it helps the sperm move and survive and the sperm gets stored in the vas deferens. The only way the sperm can get out of the testicles is by the urethra, the urethra also transports urine. Female reproductive system: Conections: In the vagina there is a place were eggs are being created and it is called the ovary. Where fertilization happens in the fallopian tubes and thats where the sperm can go through and contact with the egg and the female will get a big risk of getting pregnant. If the female gets pregnant in the uterus is where the fetus is being develop during pregnancy. Teenage Pregnancy

Transcript: Teenage Pregnancy Introduction Dr.Boesky is explaining how teenage pregnancy can be harmful to teens, children, and society. I have researched statistics, problems, causes and solutions of teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy is a problem in our society today because it affects everyone, and we need to know what causes this problem so we, as individuals and as a whole, can work towards stopping it. First, I will tell you why teenage pregnancy is a problem. Then I will continue by explaining the causes and possible solutions. Finally, I will address why teenage pregnancy is wrong. Problem According to Gale Opposing Viewpoints, an online database for issues, teenage pregnancy is an issue today. Statistics Before the age of eighteen, 56% of women and 73% of men have had sexual intercourse. 63% of teenagers have used a condom when having sexual intercourse and 17% used birth control a month before engaging in sexual activities. About 10% (1 million) of teenagers in the United States become pregnant, which is about 1 in every 8 births. 33% of these teenagers abort their babies. 14% go through a miscarriage, and the last 52% go through child birth. Of the 52% of teenagers that go through child birth, 90% of them keep their children. The other 10% put their babies up for adoption. 87.9% of pregnant teens were taught about HIV or AIDS. Affects, teen mothers, the children, and the teens parents. This also affects you. Almost everyone in this room could have a baby before the age of 20. People such as friends, girlsfriends, and sisters can also get pregnant. You would have to watch loved ones go through a difficult pregnancy. Cause Population No Contraception No HIV or AIDS worry Hard to get contraception Risks Peer pressure No guidence Drugs and alcohol Media According to Admin, an author on roevwade.org, a website for both sides of an argument, on February 16, 2011, this affects the society as well. Experts believe that the rates will keep rising until it reaches the record high. In 1990, there were 116.9 pregnancies per 1,000 women. In 2006, there were 71.5 pregnancies per 1,000 women. If the rates keep increasing at this rate, the record high will be reached by 2030. 18 years from now, most of us will have our own kids. As a result, our kids will be affected by this problem. Solution Each member of the audience can understand that both boys and girls are responsible for avoiding teenage pregnancy. Teens need to resist peer pressure and talk openly with parents or other adults about sexual intercourse. If you are sexually active, you need to use both birth control and condoms. This will give you a 98% chance of not getting pregnant. Adults need to talk with teenagers who come to them and provide them with information and programs that these teens can go to. They also need to explain the consequences on sexual intercourse and how it could affect their life. Government Communities Parents These solutions will: lower teenage birth rate limit peer pressure limit parents worry help the economy limit the amount of people in poverty Opposing Viewpoints Teens become pregnant because: No contraception Lifestyle Peer pressure Media Teenage pregnancy affects everyone in a negative way. Teen mothers Children Parents Audience Conclusion By recognizing this issue and knowing the causes, we can stop it and allow more teenagers to live better lives. What you need to do: Teens- resist peer pressure, talk to parents, and use contraception adults- talk to teens and provide them with answers and information More people would live happier, healthier, and safer lives without teenage pregnancy. Teenage pregnancy is an issue in the world today and we need to all come together to change it.
