Transcript: Marriage is More Than Just a Bond Patterns and Dissonance in Style and Generic Conventions (cont.) Function & Relations Background Aegeus’ entrance also related to the element of “luck” within the play. Jason’s rescue by Medea is based on luck. Aegeus’ appearance is as well, and Jason also describes his meeting of Creon’s daughter as an unexpected piece of “good luck.” (553-54) Also accomplished is the confirmation in Medea the belief that childlessness causes great suffering for a Greek nobleman and to direct the audience’s attention to this fact. Introduction of Aegeus Conversation shifts from an angry emotionally driven quarrel to logical / manipulative plea Medea asks for safety Makes Aegeus swear an oath Change emphasizes Medea is emotionally unstable Medea's manipulative character Emotion / Logic Close Reading Excerpt #2 Marriage is a very important aspect in Greek play as well as generally speaking. It holds special characteristics in different situations and circumstances. It is more than just a relationship between two people who love each other. In Medea two different perspectives about marriage are portrayed. Jason explains why he plans to remarry again; he calls it a “plan” that is igneous, disciplined and farsighted. As in ancient times marriages were also performed for the good of the kingdom and to make new alliances with other kingdoms to assure help in case of war. Where as for Medea, this marriage of Jason's opens the door to severe destruction and a gateway to seeking revenge. She kills four people, including their two sons. Marriage in her case was the end of her happiness and well being as well as of the people around her. Intelligent, but Cunning Shows the conflict of self-interest and how greed can ultimately cause destruction and hate. Jason used Medea to get the Golden Fleece and Creon’s Daughter for political benefits Medea used Jason to escape her homeland Shows Euripides’s personal perception of women Women are over emotional and can’t think clearly Women are too clingy Women are very selfish and dishonorable Too Much Pride is Never Good Close Reading Excerpt #3 Jason is only with Medea because it could help him get the Golden Fleece Medea was only with Jason to escape from her homeland. She later is only helping Aegeus to again escape from her own situation. Aegeus only agrees to help Medea, because he thinks she can help cure his curse and can have children. Jason want to marry Creon's daughter to benefit himself and his kingdom. There is no love or companionship in these relationships. These characters are only together to benefit each other and once those benefits are fulfilled, they soon abandon each other; just as Jason abandoned Medea. Medea's relationship with her children does not have love and compassion either. She sacrifices both of her children to seek revenge with Jason. Human nature always tend to prioritizes itself whenever it comes to sacrifices and making decisions. It always pick itself against anyone even if the choice is between oneself and one's own child. Lastly, self-interest corrupts. It's within human nature to be self-interested. Relationships as such are expected to be innocent and yet they are tarnished by ones own personal motivations. Function & Relations Switch in Emotion/Logic Love to the Force of Self-interest Jason Talks calmly / Logically Claims that everything is for the good of their children Appeals to the Gods Sucks up to Medea to calm her down Offers to help Medea escape Corinth Glorifies her and calls her clever and famous Medea Talks angrily / emotionally Claims that Jason only uses marries for personal benefits. Doesn’t even mention the Gods once Character A Two-Way Mirror Theme Dialogue Syntactical shifts in dialogue serve as indicators of both the atmosphere of the situation and also the attitudes of the characters. Often times, Medea shifts into short, clipped sentences, conveying what seems to be an uncharacteristic calm and collected persona. In these instances, readers can assume that she has found another angle to work by alternating between appeals. These short sentences serve to further her credibility as one whose arguments are unfettered by simplistic emotions and impulses. In terms of the plot, she uses this tactic to draw suspicion away from herself and to seem harmless and resigned. Again, dissonances in generic conventions are used to further the emphasis on her cunning and wit. The "concealment" of her rage is a tool used by Euripedes that works in a backwards manner: it conveys to readers that this rage and passion for revenge is so powerful that she derives a twisted sense of control from it. Themes Medea’s relation with Aegeus mirrors her experience with Jason in many ways. Medea recognizes and understands Aegeus’ concern for his self-interest and though she denies it, her distrust for him is why she makes him take an oath. But Medea’s motivation goes deeper than her distrust, as she characteristically binds herself
