The life of an Emergency Medical Technician An Allied Health Career Schedules for EMT's are done in shifts. This shifts are 8, 10, 12, and 24 hour shifts. Most EMT's work 5 days a week. An EMT's typical starting salary is 31,020$ and requires two years of schooling. Emergency Medical Services (or more commonly referred to as EMS) is the service that provides "out-of-hospital acute medical care, transport to definitive care, and other medical transport to patients with illnesses and injuries which prevent the patient from transporting themselves." He recieves a call from dispatch saying they have a young male victim with multiple GSW's (or Gunshot Wounds) to the chest. The abulance is driven to the scene and an exam is conducted. There is no head injury but there is blood coming from mouth and up from the airway. Due to the penetrating wounds the paramedic must use a trauma protocol known as "restore perfusion" which will allow for a steady blood supply to get to the rest of the organs but not accelerating hemorrhage. To do this, the paramedic would need to: - Control the airway and ventilate using a bag-valve-mask - Apply a seal to the chest wound, and decompress any tension pneumothorax - Infuse enough fluid to restore critical perfusion - Try to get intravenous access above and below the diaphragm. Because emergency care has to be available around the clock, EMTs may end up working 50 or 60 hours a week to be sure there is a professional available at all times. When not actually at work, these heath care professionals may need to remain on call, and may have to respond at a moment's notice in the event of an emergency.
