Transcript: FC Barcelona More than a club is a motto fitting FC Barcelona. A Catalan sports club founded by a Swiss footballer while on a vacation to visit his uncle in Barcelona, the team was an immediate success through its mix of Catalan, Swiss, and English personalities and influences. Within two years. However, despite the seemingly endless lists of honors (including 18 La Liga championships, 4 Cup Winners’ Cups, and 24 Copa del Rey championships) and stars that have played for the team (including Ronaldo, Romario, Rivaldo, Maradona, Cruyff, Stoitchkov, Figo, and Hagi, among others), what makes Barça more than a club is its history and relationship with the people of Catalonia. Reflection I learned a lot about FC Barcelona's culture and history by looking it up i realized that FC Barcelona started off small and became huge and popular because it never gave up. I gained doing this project because i learned new spanish words and how colors can represent a culture in many ways. I also learned traditions they do at FC Barcelona games and what they do to show their pride to their country. I developed being open minded because i had to open up to learning about a new country and their culture and how that culture relates soccer to it. I developed being an inquirer because i had to look farther into the history of FC Barcelona to see how it relates to its culture and in which ways it does represent it culture. I was curious and looked deeper into the information and found out that why they became so successful and how they got started and what they do to represent their culture IB Learner Profile Jersey Club's Culture By, Gina Bernabei The FC Barcelona change strip for the 2012/13 season merges orange and yellow in honour of the city’s culture, art, style and architecture. It has a classic orange collar with the famous Barça colours on the nape and sleeves. The back of the shirt also features the Catalan flag, and the ‘More Than a Club’ slogan on the inside of the collar, written in a typeface was specially chosen to reflect Catalan architecture. History Catlan Flag Club flags are waved, interspersed with the Senyeras, the flag of Catalonia, and they shout torero which means means bullfighter n appreciation of good play and exceptional skill. The term originated in the crowds at bullfights in response to daring moves by the fighters. Players are referred to as ‘el matador’ and the game ‘la corrida’, with fans waving white handkerchiefs in moments of deep emotion. In the museum it is full of trophies, including the European Cup won in 2006 and shirts from the club’s famous players such as Ronaldo and Maradona. On display is artwork from the club’s various anniversaries including a poster painted by Catalan artist Joan Miró and works by Salvador Dalí. The Catalan Flag, a series of horizontal red and yellow stripes, is thought to date from the 11th or 12th century. Commonly called the "Senyera," the flag was the symbol of the kingdoms of Aragon and Barcelona before being adopted by Catalan freedom fighters in 1932. One legend states that the flag's red and yellow stripes symbolize blood streaked across a golden shield, while many historians believe it was adapted from the Papal flag to demonstrate the King of Aragon's obedience to the church. The flags of Aragon and Valencia also incorporate the basic design of the Senyera.
