Powerpoint Reading Analysis
Transcript: The overall mood of the story was scary, anxious, and nerve racking. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. It was conveyed through the text by how the characters felt. The characters feared the virus and it felt like I could feel their fear. The tone the author brought to the story was frightening and foreboding. It was conveyed through the text by letting us know the person's fear. It was foreboding because the author used words to keep you reading. "He got an ugly feeling in the pit of his stomach. Those monkeys didn't have Marbug. They had Ebola. Those animals were dying of Ebola Zaire. His stomach lurched and turned over, and he sat frozen in the dark closet, with only the sound of his air and the thud of his heart." (Pg. 165) Antagonist "This is called depersonalization, in which the liveliness and details for character seem to vanish. He is becoming an automaton." (Pg. 15) I can conclude that an automaton is probably something to do with a robot. It is something that does things automatically without thought. "They don't want to speak. They answer questions with grunts or monosyllables." (Pg. 16) I can conclude that monosyllables are short sounds. They are words with one syllable. "He is still able to walk. He stands up, dripping. He stumbles down the gangway onto the tarmac. (Pg. 16) I can conclude that a tarmac is some kind of material that is on a road, something that covers the gangway. "In the apple groves at the edge of town, flocks of grackles settled into the branches for the night, squawking. (Pg. 37) I can conclude that grackles are some type of bird because it is in flocks and it squawks. "You wanted to dissect the animals quickly, before the spontaneous liquefaction began, because you can't dissect gumbo." (Pg. 46) I can conclude liquefaction means something is turning into a liquid because it says you won't be able to dissect it before it turns into a liquid. "Ebola virus is named for the Ebola River, which is the headstream of the Mongala River, a tributary of the Congo, or Zaire, River." (Pg. 47) I can conclude tributary means is it connecected to the main river. "And he went into a ten-minute diatribe about the dangers of doing hot work in a space suit, especially with Ebola." (Pg. 70) I can conclude that a diatribe is a type of lecture. He lectured her about the dangers of Ebola. "The woman then aborted spontaneously, and the nun who assisted at this grotesque delivery came away from the experience with blood on her hands." (Pg. 78) I can conclude grotesque means gorey or disgusting because of how she aborted and the blood during the delivery. "...it multiplies in colagen, the chief constituent protein of the tissue that holds the organ together." (Pg. 80) I can conclude that constituent is that it is made up mainly of that protein. That protein makes up most of the tissue. Vocabulary Irony "Oh, no. This stuff looks like Marburg. He hunched over the screen. Then his stomach screwed up into a knot and turned over, and he felt an unpleasant sensation. The puke factor. He almost panicked, almost ran out of the room shouting..." (Pg. 148) "As Dan Dalgard watched the man spill his stomach out onto the lawn, he felt, in his words, 'scared shitless.'" (Pg. 231) The setting of The Hot Zone has two major settings. It starts in Kenya, Africa. "...lived by himself in a little wooden bungalow on the private lands of the Nzoia Sugar Factory, a plantation in western Kenya that spread along the Nzoia River within sight of Mount Elgon, a huge, solitary, extinct volcano that rises to a height of fourteen thousand feet near the edge of the Rift Valley. (Pg. 3) The other major setting is in Reston, Virginia, a suburb of Washington, D.C. "The city of Reston, Virginia, is a prosperous community about ten miles west of Washington, D.C., just beyond the Beltway. (Pg. 119) "Before the crystals appeared, Reston was surrounded by farmland, and the town still contains meadows. (Pg. 119) "The town offers handsome, expensive residential neighborhoods, good schools, parks, golf courses and day care for children. (Pg. 119) Conflict My Opinion Historical and Psychological Setting Geographic Setting Summary This book was great. It was thrilling, terrifying, and nerve racking. It was truly terrifying reading about the deadly effects of Ebola. It had me on the edge of my seat 80% of the time. If I had read this book when it was first released, I would be scared to death. I think this a good book for other students to read. It was entertaining and I learned alot. The climax is when the military SWAT team is in the monkey house trying to exterminate all of the monkeys. "Watching the monkey carefully to make sure it didn't try to rush at him, he slid the pole syringe through the open door and gave the monkey an injection of anesthetic, and then pulled out the syringe, and slammed the door shut. It was the most dangerous job because of the open door. The animal could attack or try to escape. Jerry and the sergeant
