Cloud Security-Risk Assessment Data Security - Concerns and Measures to Protect Aim and Objectives [Aim] To understand security-related factors in cloud computing services that motivates/discourages enterprises to adopt services over the cloud. Initiatives to track security incidents: - Open Security Foundation Project -Cloutage.org -ENISA [Objectives] Define cloud computing Outline security-related factors in the cloud - Awareness - Risks unique to cloud services - Data security in focus Review Data Security measures in cloud services - Encryption - Standardization How to Enhance security measures for cloud service - Incident Reporting Is it a new technology? No. Is it a technology? No Mather et al. (2009) in their book Cloud security and privacy provided "definition of benefits". National Institute of Standards and Technology (NSIT) provides a comprehensive definition Service models | Deployment models | Benefits ENISA survey of cloud adoption (2009) Exploring security factors in cloud computing adoption - An enterprise perspective ENISA report (cloud computing: benefits, and risk assessment 2009) Data are the major unit for cloud services. Concerns: - Data at Rest, Data in Transit - Data Lineage - Data Remanence Encryption, does not solve the problem: - Symmetric encryption [Key management is an issue!] - Fully homomorphic (IBM) Classic security measures: Protocols, Firewalls, IDS, Isolation and virtualization Standards: quiet few, needs more though! - NIST, ENISA, ISO 27001/27002, ITIL - Focus on access control & management, other processes need to have more attention. SPI service model as presented in Mather et.al (2009, p.11) Incident reporting is very important for security measures' evolution! Definitions Keywords: Cloud Computing, Cloud Security, Data Security, Cloud incident reporting, Encryption in cloud computing Conclusions Is it all "risks and threats"? Not at all! How is it different than threats to the classic information systems? Four security threats that make the difference! Multi-tenancy | Exposure | Provider Access | Limited Auditing "Awareness is the first step towards change". Are enterprises aware of the threats? "A model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.” - NIST Special Publication 800-145 (2011 as cited in Oracle White paper (2012,p.5)) References Security is a major factor when adopting cloud computing is considered. Enterprises pay attention to data privacy and confidentiality Despite continuous incidents, there is still a considerable move into the clouds service. Cost and efficiency

Transcript: By: Natalie Davis Shortcomings of Cloud Computing: The phenomenon of Cloud Computing is best explained by thinking of having one huge knowledge filled computer at your beck and call anytime and anywhere. All of the information that we view online is stored into different “rooms” far away from where I sit. I do this almost every day simply by using my internet browser to tap into those rooms and use information. These rooms are stored on the huge knowledge filled computer I mentioned earlier in a way that makes it easy to access from my kindle fire, laptop, or smart phone all with the click of a button. These things also can store my information conveniently online so I have access to it any time I need it. What is this phenomenon? The effects that Cloud Computing could/does have on teaching are that the teacher would not be submitted to conditions in the classrooms such as overcrowding. Teachers would have the classroom online and it would benefit the teacher because she could teach a large range of students from different areas all from the comfort of her computer. Currently the Cloud Computing is very useful for the teacher because it gives the students an opportunity to access homework from at home, work, a friends, or anywhere really. This is beneficial if you have a project guideline go out, homework questions, or even additional information that will ne necessary for the student to know on an exam. The ability to improve the conditions for a teacher is simply unmatched with Cloud Computing. It gives the student access to the teacher when needed and gives the teacher backup when a student’s complains about not having the notes, the questions that were for homework, or the study guide for the test. The teach can go over those type assignments then post it in “The Cloud” to avoid the students not getting the assignments they need. This would make it easier for the teacher because the students shouldn’t have any more than questions about the assignments since they would have access to anything the teacher makes available to them. Assignment #8 Cloud Computing resources that can be found on a computer to deliver a service over the internet. Implementation in K-12: Cloud Computing is already being used in schools today. While browsing the internet I found a story about a girl whose parents traveled so much for work she had to complete homework online after enrolling in an online high school in Indiana while she was on a ship in order to not fall behind in her studies. This is an absolute perfect example of how Cloud Computing is being implemented in schools. Children are given the opportunity to complete schooling from virtually anywhere with an internet connection and are able to do so efficiently. This girl I was speaking about received straight A’s and was expected to complete homework assignments, quizzes, and even exams while she was out of the states. I would say using Cloud Computing in this fashion would put a lot of responsibility on the child and even the parent but it is fact that it can be used to continue the education of people who are on the go. This also can be used in normal classrooms simply because Cloud Computing does not tie students or even the educator to a computer since it is all stored and ready to show in “The Cloud” for their use. I said previously that is can be virtually tapped into from anywhere so even student at a normal high school would have access to say notes, study guides, and anything else the teacher may want to put out there for their benefit. All in all Cloud Computing is definitely something that would benefit the classroom and help the teacher teach her student much more easily than it is in many classrooms currently, I do see a few shortcomings of this technology. It could very easily prevent the growth of the relationship between the teacher and the students since it would technically cover all the bases missed in class. It could also take away from the parent’s involvement in the classroom since the technology would be right at their fingertips. The main concern I would really have with it though lies in the ability for each student to have access to the technology. I am studying to be an elementary educator and if the child does not have access to the internet at home they may be at a disadvantage if they are in a class where the teacher leans solely on the “The Cloud”. That age range wouldn’t be able to drive themselves to a friend’s house or to a location that could offer free internet access. They may not even have a computer or something of that matter that could be used to get the work they needed. The responsibility would fall on the parent and if it is a busy parent this could be a huge inconvenience and cause a lot of problems between the parent, student, and teacher. Cloud Computing The effects on teaching? What Does This Mean? What is Cloud Computing? The most common example of Cloud Computing is the resource found online called “The Cloud”. This
