Standards define what students should understand and be able to do. What is the Common Core? Do. . . The table below shows the progression of the CCSS domains and clusters across the grade before, the target grade, and the following grade. Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (e.g., 9 x 80, 5 x 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations Understanding Mathematics The CCSS define what students should understand and be able to do in their study of mathematics. “Asking a student to understand something means to ask a teacher to assess whether the student has understood it.” The Core of Common Core Writing Questions Comments Concerns Evaluations 10 College and Career Readiness Standards for Reading (K-12) DPS Timeline for Transition Dates to Remember Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (CCSSM) Explore CCSSM Crosswalk Document to determine the “CONTENT THAT IS DIFFERENT” What are the implications for mathematics education? The Common Core Standards are set requirements for English Language Arts (ELA) (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language) and the natural and social sciences (reading and writing). Domain are larger groups of related standards. Purposes of the Common Core Standards 10 College and Career Readiness Standards for Writing 3.G1 Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g. quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories. 2D Shape Sort Comparing Quadrilaterals 10 College and Career Readiness Standards for Reading (K-12) Standards for Mathematical PRACTICE Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. MP.1 Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MP.2 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. MP.3 Model with mathematics. MP.4 Use appropriate tools strategically. MP.5 Attend to precision. MP.6 Look for and make use of structure. MP.7 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. MP.8 2.G1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes Possible Activities: My Polygon Riddle Comparing Polygons Comparing 3D Shapes Color Tile Shapes Skeletal Models Geoboard Quadrilaterals Geoboard Triangles Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties 5.G3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles. Identifying Quadrilaterals Quadrilateral Criteria Constructing Quadrilaterals Quadrilateral Tangram Challenge 5.G.4Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
