The Common Core Standards are set requirements for English Language Arts (ELA) (reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language) and the natural and social sciences (reading and writing). Domain are larger groups of related standards. Purposes of the Common Core Standards 10 College and Career Readiness Standards for Writing 3.G1 Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g. quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories. 2D Shape Sort Comparing Quadrilaterals 10 College and Career Readiness Standards for Reading (K-12) Standards for Mathematical PRACTICE Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. MP.5 Attend to precision. MP.6 Look for and make use of structure. MP.7 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. MP.8 2.G1 Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles. Transcript: The Common Core Initiative Cons What would the different philosophies say about the Common Core Initiative? Idealism Realism Pragmatism Existentialism Decision making will be loss to national organizations and distant bureaucrats Greater cost to tax payers Assesment Textbooks Professional development Technology & Infrastructure What is it? Pros They “provide national continuity in education” This means that if a student were to move from state to state within the country, they would be learning the same content regardless of the different state barrier" They “prepare students for a competitive global economy" They build onto the lessons and strengths from the state standards They were “designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators to reflect aspirations for student achievement and an understanding of the realities of the classroom” They are clear and concise Discussion & Activity How does it affect teachers? How does it affect students? What is the role of the Federal Government? What is the role of the State Government? Implementation What would the different ideologies say about the Common Core Initiative? Liberal Conservative Radical Neo-Conservative Common Core Standards are standards that are nation wide. This means that when you go from state to state they do not really change. Students that move around a lot will have a little more consistency in the standards being taught and know what is to be expected of them. These standards are to help allow anyone to know what the youth of America is learning. Also the standards are being implemented to help students succeed in college and the job force. This is a key element, if the standards do not really change when you go from state to state, then the job field opens up a little more for everyone. These standards are currently for all of kindergarten subjects as well as, English and math for K-12. Common Core Standards are clear, use higher order thinking, build upon strenghts, are evidence based, and allow our students to compete globally.
