Billie Jean is considered an R&B classic. The instruments playing are drum set, drum machine, electric bass, guitar, synthesizer, strings, and voice are present. Instruments are introduced at the beginning of new sections, such as the pre-chorus and chorus. Arrangement and Instruments Composed and Larger work The song was composed on January 2, 1983. Although it wasn't part of any larger work such as a play or film. Micheal Jackson's music videos were in itself the first to be called "Mini-movies" as Billie Jean's music video lasted about 5 minutes long Micheal Jackson himself is a large historic Figure. Michael Jackson is one of the biggest influencers, motivators, and success stories to ever be. He still holds major records, even years after his death. Micheal Jackson created a language through his music that allowed people of all races to look at the world in a different perspective. He was one of the first artists of his time to use his platform to hit these issues head on. His lyrics, dancing, and music videos, known as “mini movies”, used emotion and metaphors that helped advocate for things like world peace, and racism. "Billie Jean" and “Thriller" were two of the first music videos by an African-American artist to air on MTV. Micheal Jackson paved the way for other African-American artists such as Prince, and Whitney Houston to receive air time on MTV, as well. Historic Significance Inspiration and Meaning This song is about a girl who claimed Jackson was the father of her child. Jackson based it on a woman who used to stalk him, writing him letters about a son she thought was his. Jackson rarely spoke about this woman, but he had a very hard time dealing with this unwanted attention and became more reclusive as a result. The song was his way of expressing his feelings without addressing her directly. Form The form of this song is divided into several sections, which we see a lot through Michael Jackson's music. We first start of with an introductions, simply giving the beat. We then go to the first and second verse, the pre chorus, verse 3 and 4, pre chorus, chorus, interlude, chorus then lastly, the coda. The shift between chorus and verses helps differentiate the harmony and melody Michael Jackson was simply ahead of his time, captivated anyone who listened. he revolutionized his time as a artists in his own ways. He leave a huge impact on the industry and how it’s viewed today all while influencing some other amazing artists that will forever continue to change. He wasn't afraid to change the view of modern music reforming any strict technical rules, and i believe we need more musicians like that today. Meaning to Me Rhythm Rhythm The rhythm from the beginning is a simple constant beat. After about two measures of the rhythm being played on the drums. We then enter the bass line and Micheal's voice to create the melody. The bass guitar has the most activity as it sets the tone hitting the beat to create the rhythm to contrast with Michael's voice. The bass gives clarity to the low strick beats created. It has a a tempo of 116 BPM and a time signature of 4/4. It's a mix of big and small beats such as quarter notes and eight notes. Melody Melody Throughout the song Michel creates and carries the melody with his reverb voice throughout the verses of the song. This song has a wide range of melody usage as the instrumental use tends to stay at the same regarding range, but Micheal's pitch ranges from high and low voice Micheal likes to create vocal interjections to create transitions this allows phase breakdowns allowing a transition from melody to harmony from the verses to the coras Harmony Harmony The harmony is found mostly within the chorus. I would consider Harmony to be simple. It has a way of being a simple harmony, but also very captivated. We can clearly identify 6 cords in the song and stays in the same key of f# Each verse starts at a mezzo piano and increases gradually to a mezzo forte.
