A national survey of deans and directors from U.S. nursing schools found that 59% of new BSN graduates had job offers at the time of graduation, which is substantially higher than the national average across all professions (29.3%). At four to six months after graduation, the survey found that 89% of new BSN graduates had secured employment in nursing." "It has been difficult for me to remove myself from my normal routine at home as a wife and mother. In trying to still be everything to everyone else, I scheduled my needs last and found myself starting study sessions after the children were put to bed. By then, I was exhausted and could only keep my eyes open for a short time trying to study or complete assignments. This reduced a lot of my retention of the material and made me ill prepared for some of my exams. There are a lot of students in the program who have families and also find it hard to “ignore” them when it comes to study time. We have to be ok with the fact that the house isn’t perfectly clean, it’s ok if the kids don’t always have a home cooked meal that we slaved over and that our husbands are fully capable of handling things without us. I hope that eventually my children will see that mommy sacrificed a lot to be able to provide a better life for them. They are my focus and the reason why I have pushed myself so hard and I hope that I am an inspiration to them and that I am doing something that makes them proud of me" (Rhoades, T. Interview, June 9, 2014). Recruitment- As stated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) "Efforts to increase and maintain baccalaureate-prepared minority nurses to begin to reflect the diverse population needing culturally responsive, high quality care is a continuing goal of nursing education and practice." I smiled with relief as I left. She did not realize that out of the 16 registered students for the class, I only went to the class three times- the first day, at mid-terms, and at the final. -Student centered based on current environment, past experiences, and prior knowledge -Collaborative problem solving -Assisting and facilitating students in learning -Phenomenology Constructivist Learning Environment Caring for Nursing Students Redesign of NURS 335 Learning occurs by starting with the lower-order skills of memorization and then is built on higher-order skills Memorize, Understand, Apply, Analyze, Evaluate, Create -mutual reciprocity of ideas and exchange between faculty and students -denounces the hierarchical relationship between students and faculty -supports active engagement among students Bloom’s Taxonomy Current online platforms are not conducive to a constructivist classroom. We must know students for a caring pedagogy. The course objectives would be better organized by the AACN essentials and assignments would be better created by Bloom's Taxonomy. Online discussions must be discussions NURS 335 is an online course through a private university in Indiana that covers nursing as a professional practice. Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.

Transcript: How it Made a Difference Our motivation for the conduction of the lab was our future interest in the education domain of nursing. We both share the goal of furthering our education with the obtainment of a master’s degree. Our ultimate goal, after time in the field, is to one day teach future nursing students. We think that fourth-year nursing leadership is important in providing positive mentorship to beginning students. The interaction allows for senior students to provide encouragement, determination and confidence to in completing and progressing through their program. Fourth-year nursing students are able to provide a unique insight and understanding into the needs of future nursing students. There is a strong empathy that can be shared between the two groups of students. It reinforces to first, second and third year students that there is light at the end of the tunnel! Nursing Students Helping Nursing Students Description Our flex activity was the facilitation of a first year nursing student lab. The lab activity was based on the concept of elimination. We assisted the students in identifying key items used in assisting clients in the clinical setting with elimination and the critical thinking involved in assessing the elimination pattern of a client. Our facilitation of the lab allowed us to be positive mentors to students progressing through the four-year nursing course. We were able to address fears about future practice in the hospital setting and the student’s upcoming entry into clinical practice. We were also able to connect current theoretical teaching to actual application in the clinical setting. The students were able to witness students at the end of their program completion and the confidence and independence that can be built through the progression of the program. Our involvement in the lab confirmed our future interest in the education domain of nursing. It reinforced the importance of positive mentorship to be present in all levels of nursing practice. We were also able to reflect and evaluate the significant learning curves we have overcome and achieved as we enter into independent practice. We were able to remember and understand the fears and difficulties we faced when we first entered the program. Identifying and remembering these fears allowed us to be understanding and compassionate to those just beginning their nursing journey. Flex Activity By: J. L and S.
