Specifically, they specialize in the aid and care of the institutionalized patients with mental disorders. They facilitate social and emotional needs to their patients, and help them to restore their mental health. Who do they treat? One third of psychiatric nurses in Canada work in two of our largest mental health institutions, while the others are variously employed in community mental health programs and/or clinics, residential care facilities, educational or correctional institutions, or acute/extended/long-term care facilities. The first step in the long process of becoming a psych nurse is to successfully obtain a bachelors or masters degree in nursing, which takes an average of 4 years of schooling. During such time it is recommended the individual pursuing the career takes mental health courses to further educate themselves as they are required to pass a licensure exam in order to become a registered nurse and/or advanced practitioner nurse. A minimum of two years experience as a registered nurse is required to become certified in psychiatric nursing. Psychiatric nurses often encounter patients diagnosed with acute or chronic mental health issues of which include various types of psychiatric disorders such as personality disorders, psycho-sexual disorders, psychosomatic disorders, psychoneurosis. Some specific examples such as anxiety and bipolar disorder are included as listed above. Psychiatric nurses, while developing and implementing therapeutic programs, collaborate and work in cooperation with several other mental health workers and professionals in order to best help the patient, including psychiatrists, pharmacists, social workers, physicians, psychologists, recreational/occupational therapists, and law enforcement professionals. Skills and abilities required or strongly recommended for a person entering the psychiatric nursing field include being mature & having self discipline, having a patient, caring, understanding attitude, having organizational, problem solving, and critical thinking skills, having effective verbal and written communication skills, good judgement (this is especially important for stressful situations), good physical and mental health, commitment to a lifelong learning career, and having the ability to respond quickly and appropriately in difficult situations. Also, the individual should enjoy working with others and consulting them when needed, and administering tests and assessments to gather information using a methodical approach. The general responsibilities and duties of a psychiatric nurse include (but are not limited to); Personally I have been looking into and very intrigued by a career in psychiatric nursing. Though I am not for sure decided, psychiatric nursing has been my career interest for 3 years. I find a reason behind this to be because I´ve dealt with anxiety and depression for a number of years now and take deep acknowledgment and appreciating in the people that help me to better my mental health, most specifically my psychiatrist. I find this line of work very interesting as I have always had a passion for helping people, and for making people happy. I think it would be a very self-rewarded career and I would take pride in myself investing my life into helping others. Duties
