Seashell

Transcript: A Day in the Life of a Seashell Observing and Communicating Observing the Seashell I was picked of many shells. They took me and put me on another piece of paper and traced me with a pointy object. Then started to stare at me flipping me all around. Touching me all over, smelling me and put my up to their ear.. How weird. Communicating About Shells Then these people took turns talking about all my other fellow shell friends, they were describing how we look, feel and smell. Then guessing which one of us was which. Classifying and Measuring Classifying with Shells I was chosen with four other shells to again be looked at closely. They seemed to be comparing me to the other shells they chose, writing down how we are alike and different. Such as our color, shape and size. Then they took me and the my friends and separated us into groups. Another shell and I got traced on the bivalve side and the other three on the univalve side. Measuring Shells They took me away from my friend and started to wrap this yellow tape around me. From bottom to top. left to right and my height. Then they set me on this scale and weighed me. After the put me in a cup with numbers and poured some water in. I am quite smaller than most of my friends that I am with but hopefully I was good enough. Predicting and Inferring Predicting with Shells I was in a bucket with many other of my fellow friends and they started pulling us out and separating us into different groups. Marking each of us on their papers. Then they were talking about how many of each shell would be in other buckets. After, people were shouting around the room of how many of my friends were in each of their buckets. Inferring I was a little broken on my right side.. from a previous accident that I do not want to discuss. These people decided to trace me again.. what is this the fifth time.. and infer what I would look like if I did not have my accident. Then they there talking about why they added this piece to my outline. Making Models, Defining and Investigating Making Models I was picked out from my friends again. These people were looking at me all around, feeling, touching and smelling me. Then they took this clay stuff and started to make something that looks like me. Same patterns, shape and size. Defining Operationally These people started to write about me and what I was. They were close but not exactly correct. They then found the exact description of what I am and compared it to what they thought. I am a little more complex than what people initially think. Investigating They compared me to four other shells and wanted to know who would have the most space for mollusk to live in. These people drew us, put us in water again, and colored our volume in a chart.

Seashell Reflection

Transcript: Dear Diary, This is going to be an exciting adventure! I get to be part of a science class and I'm going to help the students learn the different processes of science. Don't worry, you'll hear all about it! Shelly Day 1. Today, I was observed. They used thier 5 senses to describe me the best way that they could! They looked at me, touched/felt me, smelled me, and listened to me. Luckily, they didn't get to taste me because that would have been gross! Then they made a word bank of all the words that described me and traced me on a piece of paper and colored it in. I can't wait for tomorrow! Shelly Day 2. Today we worked on communication. I had a lot of fun with this because we played a game. The other shells and I were numbered and then they read descriptions about us and tried to guess which shell we were! They used their observations from yesterday so they had to be specific. They did a great job! Shelly Day 3. After communicating yesterday, they learned to classify today. I got to hang out with all the other shells again as they put us into different groups. They classified us several different ways, such as by color, shape, size, texture, and weight. the Weight one wasn't our favorite, but we were there to help them learn so we all just dealt with it. Shelly Day 4. I was measured today in every single way possible that you could think of! My height, width, thickness, circumference, mass, and volume measurements are all very apparent to me now! I think you get the point of what happened... Not really in the mood to elaborate. Shelly Day 5. I didn't really get to participate much today. They used their inferring skills to predict what happend to broken shells and what they may have looked like before they were broken. It was really cool to hear what they came up with and why! I can't wait to get back in the game tomorrow! Shelly Day 6. Today was pretty cool! They predicted how many of each kind of shell were in the entire classroom based on how many they had at their tables. Since I'm a bivalve, of course I was rooting for us to have the most! There were 136 of us out of 194 total shells. we won!! It wasn't really a competition, but I still think we won! Shelly Day 7. I felt like a movie star today! They made a model of me out of playdo and it looked just like me, besides being bright green. They used their senses from earlier and they did great! Shelly Day 8. I felt like the kids learned a lot today! They learned about how to investigate. They were presented with a problem and a hypothesis and then they tested it. They had to find out how much water we could each hold. They made their own predictions first then tested it out. I didn't hold the most, but I did hold a lot (because I'm a bivalve, remember?). After they collected all their data, they put the information into a graph and formulated a conclusion. Today was very informational. Shelly Day 9. Today was the last day I got to go to science class. They formulated their own definition of what a seashell is based on everything they learned this past week and a half from me and my friends. Then they looked up the real definition and compared the two. I learned a lot this week and I feel very fulfilled that I helped them learn something too! Shelly THE END!
