How are the "Top Tweets" pushed to the top? How are the "Top Tweets" pushed to the top? Twitters algorithm looks at the amount of interaction a post gets. Ie; Likes, replies and retweets. Then rates every tweet in order of the amount of interaction they received, the tweets with the most interaction become the top tweets. What is a "Twitter bot"? What is a "Twitter bot"? A Twitter bot is a program designed to automatically retweet, like and follow others on Twitter. In the past they were used to make someone seem more popular, now they are being used to purposefully spread fake news. Why do people inadvertently spread fake news on twitter? Why do people inadvertently spread fake news on twitter? People often don't often read the news they are presented with, instead they spread news based on how the headline sounds/ if it agrees with their political leaning. What steps can you take to examine a tweet to see if its credible? What steps can you take to examine a tweet to see if its credible? Do they have any biases? A specific political leaning? Do they belong to a group that might have specific goals? This may not totally disprove the tweet, but it is still important to check the agendas of the person posting it. Examine the profile Examine the profile Is there even a link to an article? If so is it real? Does it match the headline or the tweet? If they are not the same they may have been taken out of context on purpose (with an assumption that many people will retweet without reading the full article) Click on the link to the actual article Click on the link to the actual article If someone claims to have been at an important event, for example, does the time validate that claim? Check time of the tweet Check time of the tweet Do they cite a specific study or source? Can you view this study? Can you verify the study or source in other places by googling it? If you can find the article in many other legitimate news sources , it can most likely be trusted. If it is too an actual peer reviewed independant study you can also most likely trust it. If the article uses vague language like "studies show" or refers to information without citing it, it is porbably not credible. Check on studies or sources of the tweet Check on studies or sources of the tweet What is the goal of the group? Is their political leaning very apperant in their tweets? Everyone has some political leaning, even the most objective news sources do. They could still be telling the truth in their tweet, but it is still good to take what they say with a grain of salt.
