By: Michelle Milgram Rain Man Understanding A mental illness is a psychological disorder, which can be observed through the individual's behaviour, thoughts, emotions, self conduct, and how they perceive things, which is not thought to be part of normal development within the society or culture. After Rain Man The storyline of Rain Man is about a man named Charlie Babbit who, when his father passes away, discovers he has an autistic savant brother, Raymond. From a fallout between Charlie and his dad when he was 16, Charlie left home and ended all communication with his father. Finding that he was only left the car and the rose bushes and that the 3 million dollar estate was left to the institution in which his brother lives, Charlie kidnaps Raymond, who is Charlie's childhood imaginary friend Rainman, as a bargaining tool to get his "fair-share" of the money. Charlie develops from being a very angry self-centered individual to a caring, warm hearted, and patient brother. His preconceived idea of "normal" blinded him to truly seeing his brother. Before After RAIN MAN Radio Radio After If you knew you would always have to put more effort into a friendship than the other person, but it wasn't their fault, would you still pursue the relation? Acceptance What is a mental illness? Before On the surface, the movie Radio seems to be about a man who calls himself Radio. He is mentally challenged and is ostracised from society for being different. Radio is tormented by the football team, being bound and thrown in the equipment shed. When the coach discovers this, he decides to include Radio as his assistant for the football team in the upcoming championships. There is some controversy about Radio's place with the team. In the end, Radio and the football team become great friends and most of the town has learned the error of their ways and are now much more accepting of Radio. Before Visions of Mental Illness
