You can look it up and verify it. A hypothetical example cannot be verified. It is fictional. you should never present a hypothetical example as a factual one. Narratives show how another person experienced something. It will help the audience to learn about the experience without going through it. After Surveys Bibliographic references: complete citations, on works cited page. Internal references: brief notations in the paper. Oral citation: tells listeners who the source is and how recent the information is. The are two types of style guides that stand for Modern Language Association and American Psychological Association Chapter 5 and 6 pages 98-154 Take time to listen to the interview. Do not wait until the last minute. You could forget why you wanted to use the interview. Interviews Criteria for evaluating sources Research is the process of finding and using supporting material. When planning your speech you should use multiple sources to be sure that you are presenting accurate information. You should find the best sources and then narrow down which information you should put into your speech making sure that it is useful for the point that you are trying to make. Your research should clarify or add interest to your topic. Research is not just limited to what you find on the computer. It can be from personal experiences, interviews, magazines, academic journals, and government documents. Table 5.1 Visit the library for extra research. Make sure you contact your interviewees early. Contacting them at least one week in advance is the best thing to do. Determine why you are having the interview. Research your topic before the interview so you know what to ask. While researching write down questions that you may have or don't understand. Using a recorder while interviewing would be the best equipment to use. Testimony! Interview manners Examples Testimonial evidence: Written or oral statements of others' experiences used by a speaker. Lay testimony: Statement used by an ordinary person that helps to support what you are saying. Expert testimony: Statement by someone who has special knowledge or expertise in that area. Celebrity testimony: A public figure who is known to the audience makes a statement. Citing Web Resources Personal Experience Internet MLA and APA Be polite and respectful Be aware of your tone and comments Be flexible Listen Get the basics Wrap it up Personal experience is your own life as a source of information. You know your personal experiences better than anyone else so this allows you to speak with authority. Some personal experience may be to personal to share or even irrelevant to the point that you are trying to make. Considering if your personal experience will harm someone is very important. Retelling someone else's story is considered secondhand information. This information is easily distorted and could lead to the telling of wrong information. Is the supporting material clear? Is it verifiable? Is the source of the supporting material competent? Is the source objective? Is the supporting material relevant? a survey is a study in which a limited number of question are answered by a sample of the population to discover opinions on issues. you will most likely see them in magazines or journals. Keep in mind: How reliable is the source? How broad was the sample used in the survey? Who was included in the survey? How representative was the survey sample? Who performed the survey? Why was the survey done? In the mid-1990s you could tell the difference between research from the internet and research from the library. Today it is much harder considering that most libraries now have Web-based portals which allows people to access it from any computer. Use search engines to help with your research. Information on the internet can be bias or even wrong. You should check with multiple sources to verify the information to be true.
