Transcript: The colonists in the Southern colonies had friendly relationships with the Natives at first. During the rough winters, the Powhatan Confederacy of Indians gave them food and other tips. John Rolfe, a colonist who discovered the cultivation of tobacco, married Pocahontas to form peace. Eventually, conflicts arose and lasted for twenty years, leading to Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. During this time, colonists became angry and began attacking friendly Indians. The Middle Colonies had great climate,and they also had great soil. Since they had great soil that meant they were able to grow staple crops. Staple crops included barley, oat, and wheat. New York and Philadelphia became important centers of trade. Religion/Government Religion/ Government The Southern Colonies' geography was mostly fertile so cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo were a huge part of the economy. The weather warm and it caused for long growing seasons. South Carolina had large plantations, but North Carolina was very mountainous leading it to have small farms. In fact, South Carolina's economy was similar to Georgia's. Colonists in the Northern Colonies They had a great relationship with the Native Americans. They had a trading post with the Iroquios Indians. They even exchanged fur and other goods with them. English Colonies: Labor Force Relationships w/ Native Americans The End Labor in New England was mostly done by families. At this time, there were not as many slaves around to do work. Women were also highly respected workers. They worked as homemakers, land owners and some owned small businesses. The religious tolerance attracted many people. It included Jews, Catholics, Puritans, and the Quakers. The Quakers were the Society of Friends. Government in the Middle Colonies elected their own legislature. They established a general court which later became acts of self government. Dissenters who disagreed with laws would be punished or forced out of colony. That is actually how some states were founded. The Northern Colonies are located on the northern part of the colonies. The soil of the Northern Colonies is very rocky and the climate was harsh. The colonist didn't know how to farm until natives taught them how to fertilize plants. The economy was was mostly based on trade and farming. Major industries include merchants' trade, shipbuilding, and fishing. Middle Colonies Religion/Government Geography/ Economy The Southern Colonies Labor Force Relationships w/ Native Americans Geography /Economy Labor Force The Southern Colonies consist of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The colonists were friendly with the natives, but when they wanted the Indians' land, conflicts arose and the peace was broken. This region's economy relied on cash crops since it had a warm climate, fertile soil, and long growing seasons. Some cash crops include tobacco, rice, and indigo. South Carolina had large plantations and many slaves since it had very fertile soil, whereas North Carolina had small farms since it was so mountainous. Success in agriculture led to an increase in demand for laborers in the Southern Colonies. Slavery was a huge part of the culture because plantations required lots of work. The slaves lived by a slave code which stated that slaves could not gather in groups, own weapons, learn to read or write, and travel without a pass. The government of the Southern Colonies was democratic and had an elected assembly to agree on political decisions. The King did have a big influence on the government though. In England, Catholics were being persecuted , so they moved to America and established Maryland as a refuge. The Middle Colonies consist in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. They often prided themselves on their rich diversity. They had a great relationship with the Natives. They did have lots of slaves, but indentured servants were a larger source. The slaves had many different jobs. They had a good amount of African slaves when they first started. In the Middle Colonies they mostly grew staple crops, which were crops that were always needed. Unlike New England they had many different types of religions there. They also had agricultural products and natural resources. They were the big food producing region. Transcript: Bacon attacked and burned Jamestown which is called Bacon's Rebellion but he died of a fever and the rebellion was ended. The colony began to grow stronger in the mid-1620s when more settlers arrived there. Many people had slaves to work for them, although, slavery was not very popular. The Massachusetts Bay Colony passed some laws requiring parents to provide education to their children. The colonists got help from the Powhatan Confederacy, they received food and taught them how to farm crops such as corn. In Plymoth, the name of the colony, women had more legal rights than they did in England. Tobacco farmers established large plantations. Pilgrims on the Move Puritans Leave England Anne Hutchinson publicly discussed religious ideas which made her get kicked out of the colony because the though she was crazy. Most colonists stopped their children's education after the elementary grades so they could work on their parent's farm. After a certain amount of time, the Apprentices became journeymen who traveled and learned new skills. Many people in Virginia lived on scattered farms rather than in towns Samoset also introduced a Patuxet Indian named Squanto who taught them how to fish and farm. In 1609, about 400 settlers arrived in Jamestown and disease hit and only about 60 colonists survived the "Starving Time" as they called it. Powhatan Confederacy Many of the workers they hired were indentured servants. The Mayflower Compact James Oglethorpe founded Georgia in 1732 and founded the city if Savannah in 1733. In the mid-1620s, England's economy suffered and many people lost their jobs. Great Migration On May 14, about 40 miles up the James River, the colonists founded the first permanent English Settlement, Jamestown. In England, women could not sue, make contracts, or own property. Education in the Colonies Headright System The plantations were made possible by the headright system which was also started by the London Company. The northern economy had many skilled craftspeople. The southern colonies' cash crops were difficult to harvest so they needed many slaves. Apprentices lived with their master and they learned from them. Expansion of Slavery Fishing Parents wanted their children to learn how to read the Bible. In 1605, a company called the London Company asked King James to found a settlement. Section 1 A protestant group named the Puritans wanted to reform the Anglican Church. In 1700, most of the men and women in New England could read and write. The demand for workers was greater than the supply of people wanting to work as indentured servants. The Pilgrims and the Naive Americans had a feast also known as Thanksgiving where they killed wild turkeys to mark the survival of the Pilgrims in the new colony. Because of the fighting, the English Crown canceled the London Company's charter because they could not protect the colonists. Since they left, they were able to practice their religion freely without persecution. Maryland War in Virginia A New Colony Also, the Church of England punished Puritans who disagreed with the official rules and opinions. Many colonies such as Connecticut, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rode Island were based on manufacturing. The merchants grew in power because of all the money they were making. People also captured and killed whales with spears and harpoons for the oil for lighting. In 1712, the Carolina colony split up into South and North Carolina because it was too hard to control for one person. Daily Life in Virginia Because of the Headright System, colonists who paid their own way to Virginia got 50 acres of land in return. Women in the Colony Founding a New Colony Over 40,000 people left England to go to the English Colonies. They were not allowed to worship freely by the Church of England. Settlement in Jamestown In 1614, a colonist named John Rolfe married Pocahontas, which helped the colonists' relationship with the Powhatan Confederacy. Pilgrims and Puritans When the first winter came, nearly half of the Pilgrims died from sickness and freezing weather. The Carolinas and Georgia Most men worked in the field chopping wood for a shelter while women cooked and sewed and also carried water and dried fruit and also cared for livestock. Pilgrims were a Separatist group that left England to escape from religious persecution. New England merchants traded with other colonies, locally, and sometimes traveled far away to trade. In 1630, a fleet of ships with Puritan colonists on board left England to go to Massachusetts and they were led by a man named John Winthrop. Higher Education The second college was founded in Virginia in 1693 called William and Mary. The Pilgrim's settlement included many families who worked together to survive who were also the center of religion and community well-being.
