The English Colonies
Transcript: The colonists in the Southern colonies had friendly relationships with the Natives at first. During the rough winters, the Powhatan Confederacy of Indians gave them food and other tips. John Rolfe, a colonist who discovered the cultivation of tobacco, married Pocahontas to form peace. Eventually, conflicts arose and lasted for twenty years, leading to Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. During this time, colonists became angry and began attacking friendly Indians. The Middle Colonies had great climate,and they also had great soil. Since they had great soil that meant they were able to grow staple crops. Staple crops included barley, oat, and wheat. New York and Philadelphia became important centers of trade. Religion/Government Religion/ Government The Southern Colonies' geography was mostly fertile so cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo were a huge part of the economy. The weather warm and it caused for long growing seasons. South Carolina had large plantations, but North Carolina was very mountainous leading it to have small farms. In fact, South Carolina's economy was similar to Georgia's. Colonists in the Northern Colonies They had a great relationship with the Native Americans. They had a trading post with the Iroquios Indians. They even exchanged fur and other goods with them. English Colonies: Labor Force Relationships w/ Native Americans The End Labor in New England was mostly done by families. At this time, there were not as many slaves around to do work. Women were also highly respected workers. They worked as homemakers, land owners and some owned small businesses. The religious tolerance attracted many people. It included Jews, Catholics, Puritans, and the Quakers. The Quakers were the Society of Friends. Government in the Middle Colonies elected their own legislature. They established a general court which later became acts of self government. Dissenters who disagreed with laws would be punished or forced out of colony. That is actually how some states were founded. The Northern Colonies are located on the northern part of the colonies. The soil of the Northern Colonies is very rocky and the climate was harsh. The colonist didn't know how to farm until natives taught them how to fertilize plants. The economy was was mostly based on trade and farming. Major industries include merchants' trade, shipbuilding, and fishing. Middle Colonies Religion/Government Geography/ Economy The Southern Colonies Labor Force Relationships w/ Native Americans Geography /Economy Labor Force The Southern Colonies consist of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The colonists were friendly with the natives, but when they wanted the Indians' land, conflicts arose and the peace was broken. This region's economy relied on cash crops since it had a warm climate, fertile soil, and long growing seasons. Some cash crops include tobacco, rice, and indigo. South Carolina had large plantations and many slaves since it had very fertile soil, whereas North Carolina had small farms since it was so mountainous. Success in agriculture led to an increase in demand for laborers in the Southern Colonies. Slavery was a huge part of the culture because plantations required lots of work. The slaves lived by a slave code which stated that slaves could not gather in groups, own weapons, learn to read or write, and travel without a pass. The government of the Southern Colonies was democratic and had an elected assembly to agree on political decisions. The King did have a big influence on the government though. In England, Catholics were being persecuted , so they moved to America and established Maryland as a refuge. The Middle Colonies consist in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. They often prided themselves on their rich diversity. They had a great relationship with the Natives. They did have lots of slaves, but indentured servants were a larger source. The slaves had many different jobs. They had a good amount of African slaves when they first started. In the Middle Colonies they mostly grew staple crops, which were crops that were always needed. Unlike New England they had many different types of religions there. They also had agricultural products and natural resources. They were the big food producing region. Slaves worked in cities as skilled laborers, black smiths, and carpenters. Other slaves worked on farms, board ships, and in the growing shipbuilding industry.
