FREE EDUCATION FOR EVERYBODY
Transcript: In early America, their weren't a lot of schools outside of Massachussetts. A lot of children got their education by either being taught by their parents, they had tutors, or were sent away to boarding school. By the 1830s, their were public schools for white male children. In 1837, Horance Mann took control over the new Massachussetts Board of Education and wanted free, equal, non-religious, schools for all children in all social classes. PEOPLE BEHIND THIS REFORM Horance Mann was the first secretary of the Massachussetts Board of Education. He established the first state supported teacher's college. Mann worked for improvement in schools, a longer school year, and prepared teachers. He believed that education would protect democracy because they would have more educated people in office. He improved the schools by improved teaching methods, enriched the cirriculum, and a six month school year. Henry Barnard - helped produce a new educational system in Rhode Island and Connecticut. William Seward - New York Governor that extended support of public schools in the early 1840s. If you were poor, you couldnt really be educated but because you didn't have money to be taken to a school to be taught. Even though education now is free we should never take it for granted because other people struggle to get education.
