Different Types Of Natural Gas photo credit Nasa / Goddard Space Flight Center / Reto Stöckli To release the energy held in the gas, it is burned. This produces a large amount of heat, which is put to various uses. At homes, natural gas is burned and the heat used directly, in cooking or temperature control. In natural gas plants, the heat is used to power large turbines known as combustion turbines, or turn steam turbines by heating water. Natural Gas It is an ideal fuel for many applications: •Residential - cooking, heating and hot water •Commercial – cooking, heating, drying and hot water •Industrial - processing and manufacturing •Power generation – in power station turbines and cogeneration plants •Transport – as a fuel for vehicles such as trucks and buses Natural gas is well …naturally occurring gas. It forms naturally from decayed plant and animal matter compressed over millions of years far below the earth's surface. Natural gas is a popular fuel choice because it burns cleaner, hotter, and brighter than other fossil fuels like coal and oil. It is also a known for having no toxic or chronic physiological effects (that is, it is not poisonous). Exposure to a moderate concentration may result in a headache or similar symptoms due to oxygen deprivation http://www.naturalgas.org/overview/uses.asp How it Generates Electricity These are Extra Pics Bibliography Naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas (Natural Gas) mixture consisting primarily of methane, with other hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen sulfide. Appliances Natural gas itself is even more powerful at causing global warming than CO2 (about 20 times more powerful!) so if there are any leaks in a natural gas supply, this will cause big problems to the global climate. Natural gas is getting more and more expensive, and we are currently using more and more of it. There is only a limited supply of it, and once it's gone it's gone. Considering this, it also has a very bad effect on the economy as well as its effects on the environment due to global warming. By Jacky, Alex, Ian, Vikram and Daniel Appliances

Natural Gas

Transcript: By Lesley Brooks Pictures of natural gas/uses Arrow!!!! Availability The U.s. only has a limited amount of natural gas left. We have about 4,711 tons left. That's not very much, compared to other countries. Russia is the country with the most natural gas reserve. Russia- 42,300 tons of natural gas reserve. Iran- 24, 021 tons of natural gas reserve. Methods of Collection/Production Natural gas is stored underground in wells. First, scientists use seismic surveys to find the spot to drill. One they find a promising spot, they drill. When gas is found, it flows through the well to the surface. From here, the gas is carried by pipes to the plant. Here is a video of how a natural gas plant works! Location Natural gas is found in Texas, California, Louisiana, New York, Florida and Illinois. In Wyoming, it is mostly found in Sublette County. There are lots of natural gas plants and places to drill in this area. Recommendation Natural gas has many good reasons for use. It costs 3.9-4.5 cents per kwh, which is cheap compared to other types of energy, such as nuclear (11.1-14.5 cents per kwh.) It also provides much energy. There are many great reasons to use natural gas, but there are also many downfalls. A few reasons that natural gas isn't that great of an energy source, is that it's nonrenewable, it is bad for the environment and its hard to collect. First, it's nonrenewable. This means that there is only a limited amount left. Once we run out, it's gone. The U.S only has 4,711 tons left! Second, natural gas is bad for the environment. It can cause pollution from burning it and erosion from building power plants. Finally, it is hard to collect. You have to find where it is underground, and that can be a pain. Other resources are a lot easier to collect. Natural gas does have positives, but it has more negatives. Based on all of these things, I can say that I do not recommend natural gas. The U.S should reduce the use of it because 1. it's nonrenewable, 2. it's bad for the environment and 3. it's hard to collect. The world is going to run out of natural gas soon, so we need to stop depending on it's source of energy. Natural gas is a fossil fuel, which means that it's nonrenewable. They are formed from dead plants and animals under heat and pressure. It is combustible. Some of the uses for natural gas are heating, electricity and cooking (the stove range). 2. 3. Kinetic Motion (Turning the turbine.) What is it? 5. 6. 4. Natural gas is bad for the environment! 2. Kinetic thermal. (Burning of the gas and making steam.) 1. Potential chemical. (Stored natural gas.) 1. The cost of natural gas, for electricity, is 3.9-4.5 cents per kwh. This is pretty cheap, considering that coal is 4.8-5.5 cents per kwh. Nuclear is very expensive, being 11.1-14.5 cents per kwh. 4. Kinetic electrical. (Generator, making electricity.) 6. Cost These are all the places in the U.S that have active or potential natural gas drilling areas. 2. Putting up natural gas power plants can cause erosion or landslides 5. 1. This is bad for plants or animals that depend on the water source. 8. 7. 9. 3.

Natural Gas

Transcript: Natural Gas Natural Gas -consists primarily of methane -found in coal beds -is an important fuel source of major feedstock and fertilizers It is a non-renewable resource History of Natural Gas - Natural Gas has been around for millions of years but it wasn't until recently that we figured out how to get it to the surface and use it. Years ago people couldn't figure out what is was and when it seeped to the surface and started on fire, they couldn't explain it. Natural Gas comes from deep under the earth.Sometimes with oil deposits. It is recovered by drilling into the ground and being piped up into storage tanks. When the methane burns it reacts with oxygen and creates thermal energy. The energy in natural gas is stored as chemical potential energy. Uses -power generation -residential use (heating and cooking) -used to power vehicles (burns cleaner than gasoline) -used to make ammonia fertilizer and hydrogen Minnesota Uses Over 2/3 of Minnesota households use natural gas for heating during winter. Advantages of Natural Gas -Cheap -Natural -Most homes use it so its popular Disadvantages -Highly flammable -toxic if you inhale too much -Non-renewable resource Natural Gas and the Economy -The natural gas industry supports nearly 4 million jobs and adds more than $385 billion to the national economy Natural Gas and the Enviroment -Burns more efficiently than hydrocarbon fuels or electricity -Burns cleaner than hydrocarbon fuels because its composed mostly of methane which is a light compound The future of Natural Gas Natural Gas will start to replace old coal plants to reduce greenhouse gases. People say that natural gas is the bridge to a no-carbon future. Fun Facts 1.When natural gas is cooled to 260 degrees below zero it changes from a gas to a liquid 2.Natural Gas is colorless and odorless, but utility companies add the smell of rotten eggs to help make the gas more noticeable 3.There are more than 1 million miles of underground gas pipelines across the US Sources http://naturalgasw.a.tripod.com/id9.html http://www.lowimpactliving.com/pages/your-impacts/natural-gas2 http://web.mit.edu/mitei/research/studies/naturalgas.html

NATURAL GAS!!!!

Transcript: NATURAL GAS By Brianna Johnson and Madison Creech Natural Gas is made up of 10 various gases they are: Methane Ethane Propane Butane Sulphide Carbon Dioxide Oxygen Nitrogen Hydrogen and rare gases This is what we use natural gas for and how much we use it. There's more than one problem with natural gas. One of the main problems is that It's EXPENSIVE!!!! Alone America spends $12,000,000,000 on natural gas. So it costs the economy a lot of money because they pay for all the natural gas we get. $$$$$$$$$$ Because there was so much natural gas, it created a lot of jobs for people to dig it up and it started to become common for people to have drilling jobs for people to drill natural gas out of land. Unfortunately, it caused a lot of erosion because it started to become common. Other disadvantages of natural gas are that it's highly flammable and its odorless, so you can't tell if its on or if its off. Also there are advantages of natural gas. First, there is the fact that it creates a lot of energy. Then, its easy to transport over long distances. Finally, there is the fact that it doesn't cause a lot of pollution to the environment. Natural gas was forming around the time dinosaurs existed, so in probably 200 to 300 million years ago. But it wasn't until around 1000 B.C. that people started to question what it was. They thought it posed as a threat because the people then thought that lightning would electrocute them and that fires would destroy them. Natural gas once it is stored up, it can be used automatically or can be stored in jars or a container until usen, or when necessary. So it can be years until it's usen, depending on when it is most necessary to be usen. When it's needed it is then heated or burned to a certain degree to cause energy. Just like coal and oil, natural gas is a fossil fuel in its own way, and it is unrenewable. Also like coal and oil, natural gas is found underneath the ground and you'd have to dig it up to get it. By the year 2020, the united stated will have no more than 61 years left of natural gas left for America and 167 years left in circulation around the globe.l Sources: www.naturalgas.org www.fossil.energy.gov www.powerincoorperation.com www.discovery.com www.wikipedia.com The Science Book and www.answers.com This was a prezi made by Madison Creech and Brianna Johnson THE END!!!
