Menopause

Transcript: Menopause The cessation of menstruation that marks the end of a woman's reproductive capacity. What causes menopause? A woman is born with a finite number of eggs, which are stored in the ovaries. The ovaries also produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone, which regulate menstruation and ovulation. Menopause occurs when the ovaries no longer produce an egg every month and menstruation stops. Natural menopause is the permanent ending of menstruation that is not brought on by any type of medical treatment. For women undergoing natural menopause, the process is gradual and is described in three stages: Postmenopause: these are the years after menopause Also, menopause occuring before age 40 is considered premature menopause. Signs and Symptoms Identifying Menopause Priority Nursing Diagnosis Interventions 1. Assess the patient's understanding of menopause and how she feels about it. Rationale: The patient may need reassurance that her symptoms and responses are normal and common. 2. If drug therapy is used, then instruct the patient regarding self-medication. Rationale: Caution patients on estrogen to report any signs of circulatory disorders to the physician immediately. Medications Estrogen and Progestin Agents Estrogen creams, vaginal tablets, and suppositories. Also drugs to control "hotflashes" which include clonidine patches, gabapentin, Bellergal-S, and several antidepressant agents such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. Gabapentin Gabapentin may cause dizziness and drowsiness Paroxetine Advise patient, family and caregivers to look for suicidality, especially during early therapy or dose changes. Advise patient not to take gabapentin within 2 hr of an antacid May cause drowsiness or dizziness. Insomnia Instruct patient to take paroxetine as directed. Headache

Transcript: The most common symptoms are: Hot Flashes Night Sweats Irregular Periods Vaginal Dryness Treatment options include: hormone replacement therapy (HRT) •vaginal lubricants •antidepressants The treatment options available often come with their own risk factors, including an increased risk for cancers such as uterine cancers, breast cancer, heart attack, strokes, and blood clots. After you have had menopause, if ever the period returns, it is not a normal period. It could be something serious causing the bleeding. Menopause can also influence the onset of osteoporosis, arthritis, and endometrial cancer (which is cancer of the womb). With good nutrition and regular physical exercise, it is thought to improve overall health. http://menopause.about.com/od/menopauseglossary/g/Menopause_Def.htm http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.medicalook.com/diseases_images/menopause.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.medicalook.com/Womens_health/Menopause.html&usg=__oYCZ0KMyGt6Y_y8m29-dDFFKmhg=&h=340&w=350&sz=23&hl=en&start=19&zoom=1&tbnid=-QEPs8IPWCNtnM:&tbnh=117&tbnw=120&ei=YWhXUOeGHob20gH374HgAg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmenopause%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26gbv%3D2%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1038689/10-questions-youve-wanted-ask-menopause.html http://www.34-menopause-symptoms.com/articles/early-menopausal-symptoms-entering-menopause.htm http://www.womenshealth.gov/publications/our-publications/fact-sheet/menopause-treatment.cfm#p http://womenshealth.gov/menopause/symptom-relief-treatment/ http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Menopause/Pages/Treatment.aspx Bibliography By: Kyshonna Allen Menopause a naturally occurring event that happens to all women between the ages of 40 and 55. Transcript: "What are bioidentical homrmones?" Harvard Women's Watch. With the amounts of genetically modified hormones (GMOs) and other chemicals that go into the animals we eat and are doused on the plants we consume, along with the preservatives that are added during production, it is no wonder that obesity and disease is at an all time high in the United States. Eating, organic, natural foods produced by Mother Nature herself, is a very effective way to lessen the bothersome hot flashes, and the scary bone loss that happens when estrogen is low in the menopausal body. The ultimate goal is to eat for maximum hormonal balance. A great way to do this is by using the Glycemic Index to pick foods that supports level blood sugars. Singing Uterus Explains Perimenopause and Menopause by Ellen Dolgen- YouTube. In the 1950's women were prescribed Prempro to women over forty who were suffering from hot flashes, night sweats, sleepless nights, anxiety, and/or depression. Prempro is a combination of two drugs containing synthetic sex hormones: Premarin and Provera. (Premarin is a synthetic concoction of ten estrogens- none of which are similar to the estrogens you make in your own body- extracted from the urine of pregnant horses. Provera, a synthetic form of progesterone, can cause depression. Can't say it better! Dr. Sara Gottfried. The Hormone Cure. Some women have symptoms so harsh and debilitating that diet, exercise and supplements won't be enough to give them the relief they need or want. This is where HRT's come into play. Move Your Body! The loss of estrogen is the largest contributor to Osteoporosis; the thinning and weakening of the bones. Everyone has a grandmother, mother, aunt, sister or cousin that either has gone through, is going through or will be going through menopause. What's a Girl to Do? Change Your Diet! We are what we eat has never been truer than right now. Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is a safe and effective way to combat the more severe and relentless symptoms that perimenopause and meno-pause brings. Bioidentical hormones are a plant based hormone made from yam and soy DNA made to be identical to the molecular structure it naturally creates. Supplements, They're not your everyday vitamins! In laywoman's terms, as women get older, their reproductive eggs start to shrivel and die causing them to no longer have their menstrual cycles which in turn decreases estrogen, the vital hormone when decreased, makes them feel less like themselves and more like a raging maniac who can't remember where she put her keys and walks around with her own private heating system with a broken thermostat set to high. Non-Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy The Good- Bioidentical HRT The Bad- Non-Bioidentical HRT Supplements prolong the time a women needs Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and in a lot of cases, when combined with a healthy diet and exercise program, can eliminate the need for HRT's completely. Every person on this planet is impacted by menopause! What is menopause? Menopause- Balancing the Second Half of Life Naturally Weight Train for stronger bones! Dr. Christiane Northrup said this about weight training. “Every major muscle in our bodies is attached to underlying bone by tendons. Every time a muscle contracts, it exerts a force on the bone to which it is anchored. Any activity that builds up muscle also puts stress on the bone and helps build bone mass” Hormone Replacement Therapy Life is a journey, once we get to the final destination we are done, finished, we've passed go. Eat to balance your hormones, exercise to keep your body strong, supplement to give you a menopausal edge and use HRT's if additional help is needed. Above all, laugh, love and enjoy the journey. For example: Dr. Sara Gottfried says that the magical herb Maca.... has consistently been shown to increase estradiol in menopausal women, and helps with insomnia, depression, memory, concentration, energy, hot flashes, and vaginal dryness, as well as improved body mass index and bone density”

MENOPAUSE

Transcript: Perimenopause Life after the final Menstrual Period. today most women will live 1/3 or more of their lives postmenopausally. MENOPAUSE Menopause is understood as a process of normal change. Natural and Surgically Induce Menopause Known as Climacterium or "Change of Life" The stage immediately before menopause. Physical changes begin to accelerate and women are most likely to experience perceptible physical changes due to drops in hormones production. Marks the end of menstruation and childbearing capability. To be considered in menopause: 12 continuous months without a menstruation. Most women enter and complete menopause between 45 and 55. Age of the on set of menopause varies widely. Ovaries begin to fail to respond to the luteinizng and follicle stimulating hormones. Therefore, the ovaries do not produce Estrogen and Progesterone. Ovulation becomes erratic. The level of estrogen produced by the ovaries decreases, ovulation stops or becomes irregular, and the pattern of menstrual cycling changes. 1800's and early 1900's menopause was portrayed as negative and a tragedy that resulted in hypochondria, hysteria, and irritability. 1904's and 50's the treatment for menopause was focused on Psychiatric conditions of depression and melancholy. It was said that menopausal women were a burden to themselves and to their families. Hot Flashes Fatigue Vaginal Dryness Night Sweats Thinning of the vaginal lining (Vaginal Atrophy) irritability mood swings depression anxiety increased weight gain breast changes hair growth skin changes Surgically Induced Menopause Hysterectomies, Total Hysterectomy, and Bilateral Salpingo-oophorectomy. When a women's ovaries are surgically removed, a more abrupt and earlier menopause occurs. Estrogen and progesterone are no longer produced at the same level as prior to surgery because of the absence of the ovaries. Treatment Symptoms Hormone Replacement Therapy--- Medications that boost the levels of specific hormones. Does not cure menopause but reduces the symptoms. routes of administration-- orally, vaginal cream, vaginal ring, or transdermally.
