The Prominence Layers Of Sun Music The chromosphere is surrounded by a faintly luminous, extremely thin outer atmosphere called the corona (meaning “crown”). As the corona is a million times dimmer than the Sun's disk, it is usually invisible. It can be seen only when the light of the photosphere is blocked, as in a total solar eclipse or with a special type of telescope called a coronagraph. The Radiative zone A time-lapse film of the surface of the Sun shows the formation and dissolution of granules, updrafts of gas that form convection cells. Fusion powers the sun. Fusion is when the atoms of hydrogen must be heated to very high temperatures so they can have enough energy to fuse with another. When you fuse two hydrogen you get helium. A by product of fusion is a photon, or a chunk of light. Fusion Fusion Radiation Zone 2 The Sun's radiative zone is the section in the sun between the innermost core and the outer convective zone. Energy generated by nuclear fusion in the core moves outward as electromagnetic radiation 3,500,000 degrees Fahrenheit Temperature Temperature Deep in the radiative zone, the photons collide with plasma particles and change direction in random ways.
