Effective Communication

Transcript: Effective Communication Elizabeth Roos Jasmine Stockton Clayton Tandy Sierra Wharton Communication has been revered as the most important aspect in a relationship. Psychologist and sociologist both agree most human beings long for a close relationship with others ( it is an essential) We look desire intimacy, compassion, acceptance, common goals, and more importantly….procreation and sexual gratification. With that said, if we are to be successful in the bedroom and out side the bedroom, it is paramount to practice, pay attention, and hon. the ability to focus on your partners needs. Sociologist Kelly Strassberg states that “relationships typically suffer tension and crisis when communication process becomes blocked or muddled.” The communication process most often involves Body language Tone of voice Words used We all know that communication can get confusing. There are often misunderstandings Ex: Bedroom Bloopers Message intended by the sender might not at all be the msg understood by the receiver. How we send confusing or ambiguous messages: Slang words Out dated terms or references Uncertain jokes Untruths Exaggerations A side note: A study done by Braun & Kitzinger in 2001 revealed that slang terms applied to female genitals tend to be more vulgar or offensive than those applied to male genitals.” However, studies also show that the majority of male and female consider “TALKING DIRTY” to be therapeutic. Power games Trying to dominate the other during sexual encounters Relationship games Bringing unresolved conflics to their sexual relationships Communication games Designed to avoid confronting potentially hurtful feelings or situations. Effective Communication • Know your own values • Understand your cultural differences • Keep yourself on equal ground • Build trust for each other • Pick the right location and time for talking • The process of making good communication happen takes liberate effort and a certain degree of vulnerability. (Kelly 228) It's important to: Listen carefully Avoid making snap judgments Ask for clarification Don't be afraid of being hurtful (if necessary) One of the most popular tests used for evaluating personality traits has been the Myers-Briggs Type indicator (MBTI)(Myers &Mcaulley, 1985) and its modified version… These tests are based on a model that portrays the human personality as a combination of varying balances among four main pairs of traits. Most familiar pair of personality traits are known as extroversion and introversion. Extroverts tend to be energized by other people and external environment. Extroverts connect with others easily and enjoy group situations. Introverts prefer their own company but doesn’t necessarily mean imply being shy or antisocial. Introverts tend to draw their energy more from inside themselves. Introverts need more time and privacy for processing their inner experience and prefer one to one interactions with others. Some individuals make their judgments through logical, step by step analysis and reasoning, others are influenced more by their feelings and the desire to maintain harmonious relationships. In the final pair of MBTI characteristics, people are viewed as punctual, decisive, scheduled, and orderly or as unstructured, open-ended, and spontaneous (Kelly P. 230). The differences between people personality can also be expressed through an individual sexual preference Maintaining Loving Relationships Close relationships Begin with the attraction process Seek to spend time together Never want things to change Three primary human emotion-motivation systems Lust Attraction Attachment Process of falling in love It usually comes to an end Our society and infatuation "Being in love" Initial falling in love Usully exlcudes anyone else See only the positive "Intrusive thinking" Longing for emotional closeness Reorder priorities Communication about Sex The Ground Rules The Sexual Games We Play Making it Happen Communication about Sex The Communication Process Personality Types The Communication Process It is an ongoing and dynamic process Different for everyone A few factors that distinguish these dissimilarities are: Culture Gender Age Level of education Level of commitment Social status Expectations and anticipations of relationship

Effective Communication

Transcript: Welcome!!! :) Body Language Body Language Do not shy away from the person with whom you are speaking. Be sure to maintain a relaxed, but not slouching posture, regardless whether you are the one speaking or listening. Other things that ensure your body is communicating your attentiveness to the conversation can include: Making eye contact Making eye contact. Nodding occasionally to acknowledge a strong point in the conversation. Standing with hands clasped in front of you, never crossing your arms. Not displaying nervous ticks such as wringing hands, picking at your nails, or anything that the person communicating with you will view as a distraction from their conversation. Speech and Attentiveness When speaking, you need to be clear and concise. Speak on important matters directly and do not waste time with long drawn out stories that will cause your listener’s mind to wander. Make sure you ask whether they understand, and be willing to further explain any of your points. Do not expect someone to just “know” what you are saying, even if it is crystal clear in your own mind. In addition, one of the most important aspects of verbal communication is the ability to practice active listening. This is not just actively waiting to talk. Always make mental notes of key points when someone is speaking to you. That way once you are given a chance to speak, you can respond to the most vital issues being dealt with. When others are speaking, try to think about the exact words that they are saying. If you practice this, you will comprehend and contain 75 percent more of the information that you hear. Communication Consistency Communication Consistency Maybe your weakness is in the quality or quantity with which you communicate to your employees. Communication seems to have dwindled to superficial small talk. Great communicators practice the ability of consistent communication by remaining available. Do not be afraid to be the one who voices any concerns or difficulties. However, ensure that you are practicing open and honest communication with those who may depend on you. Be available and bold with tact. Be sure to leave communication lines open to those who may need to address problems with you. You will find that you prevent the small issues that normally have the habit of becoming large ones by making those in your life aware that you are open to discussing issues at any time. Patience Patience During your communications with others always give them time to communicate their issues as well. Remaining focused on what they are trying to communicate will show them that you are indeed open to assisting with their issues. Many of people’s communication lines tend to break down on the side where impatience is in a rush to get out of the conversation. Since you cannot control the other side, do yourself a favor and take a breath. The conversation you’re involved in is important. If you are confused as to what someone may be requesting, than repeat back to him or her what you think they said and ask if that is correct. Often this will inspire the speaker to be more in-depth about their needs, which will help you to understand them fully. Effective Communication

Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.

A child is referred to the program about once every 28 minutes. The foundation cannot keep up with the amount of wishes it receives. Therefore, more donations would allow for more wishes to be granted, and perhaps everyone's will be if enough donations are received. This is Chris Greicius, a little boy with Leukemia His wish was to "catch bad guys" with the Arizona Department of Public Safety On April 29, 1980, he was given a tour along with a hat and uniform The officers set up cones for him to drive a battery-powered motorcycle through, in order for him to earn his motorcycle officer's wings Chris returned to the hospital when the officers went to present his wings He passed away on May 3rd with his wish fulfilled To donate go to wish.org Alexander Looks Back On His Wish TO find out more about volunteering go to michigan.wish.org to the Make a Wish Foundation A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic, more willing and able to battle their life-threatening medical conditions. For many, the wish marks a turning point in the fight against their illnesses. Doctors, nurses and other health professionals say, the wish experience works in concert with medicine to make their patients feel better emotionally and even physically. That is why wishes matter. That is why we grant wishes. (Make a- Wish) Conclusion When Alexander was 9, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukhemia. As soon as she found out about his diagnosis, his mother sought out the Make-A-Wish Foundation to have Alexander's wish, to go bug hunting, granted. That same year, Make-A-Wish sent Alexander and his entire family to the Panama Canals in order to grant his wish. While he was there he saw all new plants and animals, held an iguana and even had a bee named after him. His mother even went on to say recently "It remains the greatest trip our family has ever taken." Now 21, Alexander said there's not a day that goes by that he doesn't think about his wish that was granted. He talks about how much of an impact the wish made and how he owes Make-A-Wish for giving him the joy to continue his fight that he eventually beat against leukemia. He's now a student at Center Washington University studying Environmental Sciences. There is not enough money going into the organization to fulfill all of the kids wishes
