On April 10th 2012, two reports showed sexual and domestic violence at epidemic levels in Massachusetts. A group called Jane Doe Inc. said nearly half the women and a quarter of men have experienced some form of sexual or domestic violence in their lifetime. Between 1,000 and 1,600 women a year are killed by their domestic partner. This does not include the women who kill them self in order to exit violent relationships. Factors that contribute to Domestic Violence Sources My Plan to Reduce Domestic Violence There should be more elementary, middle, high school and college programs to educate and increase the reporting of domestic violence since up to 95% of cases go unreported. Increase funding for violence treatment and prevention programs. I believe that making the punishment for domestic abuse higher would actually keep women from reporting these crimes. Domestic Violence in America http://psychcentral.com/lib/2006/what-causes-domestic-violence/ Ways to Reduce Domestic Violence 1 in 7 women in Multnomah County ages 18 to 64 are physically abused by their intimate partner each year. 1 in 5 teenagers in a serious relationship reports being hit, slapped or pushed by a partner. 21,000 children in Multnomah County are exposed to domestic violence each year. In Oregon, 48% of victims remain in an abusive home because they do not have a safe and affordable place to live. 38% of all domestic survivors become homeless at some point. http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/abuse/domestic/index.shtml
