High Impact
Transcript: Matthew 3:2 - John the Baptist Matthew 4:17 - Jesus Acts 2:38 - Peter It's about changing our minds... thinking differently about how we are living based on what God is saying. We are going to look at Scripture--and how God asks us to live, and compare it to some faulty assumptions we have about serving. What are some faulty ways we think about serving in the church? Big WE -- little they "Thank you" for "helping us" Use 'em and lose 'em Lawnmower mentality We serve Jesus together God-driven vision 5-step process Effectiveness is measured in 2 Kingdom goals Biblical Principles BUGGSPRAYER Leadership experiences burnout--they're doing all the work! Inflated sense of self-importance Lots of negative feedback--not a lot of positive feedback Miss out on the joy of seeing Jesus work in the lives of others. There is no benefit to the ministry Restoring a biblical model of volunteer ministry and experiencing organization-wide powerful ministry effectiveness. How do people perceive volunteers? Why are you here? How do people perceive volunteers? HIGH IMPACT PRINCIPLES $1.25 Friday, July 1, 2016 Feel Good Approach What is High Impact? Let's Build something together! So how about prayer? It's easier for me to just do it myself You can do it/have it all The customer is king. Give the customer what they want I'm just a volunteer--this isn't my job! I don't want any responsibility, but if you need something done, I can help. Results are the best indicator of success. If I want it done right, it's better if I do it myself. "In light of God's mercy" Feel Good Another faulty way of ministry Vol XCIII, No. 311 Only the "Pros" do the ministry Team Members observe Reinforces passive Christianity helper approach No benefit to Volunteers Another faulty way of doing ministry The Three Approaches to Ministry "We can't push too hard or they'll leave!" "It would be better to have someone on the team doing something than no one doing anything." Volunteer benefit is high because they are let loose--but is that the best? No direction or purposeful growth! Dilutes the vision of the ministry little we--BIG THEY Volunteers are the first customer! Volunteers "feel good" Vision of OCC is diluted There aren't any volunteers! No one wants to serve. Everyone wants the benefits with none of the responsibility. They don't experience the joy of being used by God and experiencing the power and faithfulness of Jesus! A lot of benefit to the ministry Every Ministry has an approach to how people serve. Why is it important to look at the different models? It's about "metanoeo"--we have to be willing to look at the ways we do ministry in light of what Scripture says. Are we living out our calling to the fullest potential? If now--we want to be aware, and we want to be able to change our minds! The Three Approaches to Ministry One faulty way to do ministry As leaders, naturally our minds, and the minds of those we are leading will go to these places. It's our job to constantly bring them back to God's plan! High Impact Model Biblical- Every principle is derived from Scripture Urgent- Time is short and we have a lot to accomplish for the Kingdom Gospel- It's all about Jesus and the power of the Gospel to change lives Grace- It's not about performance; properly motivated volunteers are motivated by God's grace Simple- Must be simple to be understood Spirit- Power of the Holy Spirit must be in everything we do Prayer Some Faulty ways of thinking: Discovering the Heart of High Impact The High Impact Model Leaders believe that we have to keep the volunteers "happy" "Metanoeo" Spiritual Warfare 1. A volunteer is a child of God 2. Financial versus HUMAN stewardship 3. Transformed Value 4. Sacred Keys 5. Select fewer more productive volunteers 6. Serving is a privilege 7. Volunteers are capable partners 8. Multiplication 9. Purposeful growth Spectator Approach The Helper Approach Leaders recognize the need for volunteers--but the volunteer becomes a "means to an end" Workers "help" us out--and leaders become "program managers" Work towards "out there" goals; no development of volunteers and "in-here" goals Volunteers serve out of obligation, with no joy in the privilege of serving Restoring High Impact begins with the heart Biblical Every principle is derived from the Word of God Volunteer = servant latreuo -priestly service, offerings Matthew 10:4, Rom 12:1, Rom 9:4, diakonos -servant, minister, office of deacon, I Tim 3: 10-13) Doulos – bond servant Exodus 21:5 – 6, Phil 2:7 Nadab – free will offering, 1 Chron. 29:9 Effectiveness: reaching the out-there, in-here goals High Impact The Spectator Approach Building can be frustrating… God is always building temples Temporary tabernacle by Moses (Exodus 25-40) Solomon’s temple (1Kings 5-8; 1 Chr 21-22, 28-29) Zerubbabel rebuilding the temple (Ezra 3-6) Living Stones (1 Peter 2:4-9) God invites us to experience His presence (in-here goals) and His power (out-there goals).
